Our annual Athletics Championships will be held in Week One of Term Four, 26th October. The venue is unchanged - Christ's College - but the format will be a little different this year. You will have the opportunity to follow your child through all of their Championship events, and to finish the day with the Sprint Finals and Relays. Thanks go to Mrs Clarke and Mr Kendrew for organising the event this year.
Senior Sport has now finished for the Winter season. St. Michael's had representative teams in Senior Football and Netball.
The Football team had a very good season, losing only two games and drawing one. Unfortunately, one of the losses was in the Final for D grade, where we lost to Parkview 2-1. 'Golden boot' for the season was Captain Oscar Carnevale. Daniel Alexander performed admirably as our goalkeeper.
The Netball team had a successful season. After winning five games on the trot, the team was promoted to the AB grade. Although they found this grade quite tough, they won their playoff game to finish fifth in the grade. It was pleasing to see many players trying netball for the first time and demonstrating excellent skills.
Madeline Kendrew has played in a number of tournaments as part of the Independent Schools' Netball squad. Madeline, who narrowly missed out on a place in the Canterbury Squad, played in Timaru and Christchurch. In Timaru, the team finished second in the C grade, while they finished fourth in the B Grade in the Christchurch tournament. Madeline played goalshoot for the team.
Madeline Kendrew has achieved her goal...again! Last year, Madeline made it to the last 32 netball trialists in Christchurch, and this year she has done it again. She has played through four trials and now faces a Final Trial this Sunday from 10am - 2pm to see if she can make the Metro A or B teams.
We wish Madeline all the best for Sunday.
Congratulations to the following Year 8 boys who have been chosen to trial for the Canterbury Hockey A & B squads:
We are very proud that our School continues to produce such fine, skilled players. We wish them all the best for the trials.
The Senior School have been playing inter-school fixtures at Hagley Park on Thursday afternoons.
Our Netball squad has won every game in this competition, and will most probably go up a grade after the first round is completed.
Our Football squad has played two, winning our last game by 8-1. Captain Oscar Carnevale scored a hat trick in this game.
Each year there are a succession of four trials that are used to pick the Canterbury A and B Metro Netball squads. These teams represent Canterbury Primary Schools' in tournaments in Ashburton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Christchurch.
Last year Madeline Kendrew made it to the last 34 trialists before narrowly missing out on a squad place. She is determined to get there this year.
Madeline has made it through two of the four trials, and will attend the third this Tuesday afternoon. We wish you all the best, Madeline. We hope you achieve your goal!
It was a very successful day for Louis Holden and Bennet Anderson, who represented us at these Championship. Louis placed 21st in the Ten yr old boys, and Bennet was competitive in his Eleven yr old boys event. There were about 130 runners in each event, so our boys achievements were fantastic.
Congratulations to our Head Prefect Madeline Kendrew, who was selected into the Independent Zone Netball team for a second year in a row. Madeline now trials for selection into the Canterbury Primary Schools' Metro squad, a team she narrowly missed out on last year. Her trial is on 21st of June.
Louis Holden and Bennet Anderson have qualified to run in the Canterbury Primary Schools' Cross Country Championship on 22nd June. Mrs Jo Clarke has been taking the boys on training runs, so they will definitely be ready!
