About the Organization
While many student clubs come and go, SLU Karate has withstood the test of time to become one of the longest running organizations on campus. Back when Saint Louis University's campus was centered in run-down, high-crime neighborhoods, SLU Karate was formed in 1991 with the goal of teaching self-defense to college students. Today, it is still the only martial arts school on campus and boasts class sizes of 20-30 members.

Getting Involved
No experience is required to join! SLU Karate offers a unique opportunity for college students to develop themselves through the Korean martial art Tang Soo Do. Classes are run in like a traditional martial arts school. The club is a part of the Cheezic Tang Soo Do Federation. At the end of each semester, you will have the opportunity to grade up to the next belt level. If you have prior experience in other styles of martial arts, you are welcome to join and train with the club. If you have specific questions, please contact the current club president, Nina Cheong (

At SLU Karate, you will learn to gain and/or develop:
- Self-Defense skills
- Flexibility
- Improved concentration
- Integrity
- Perseverance
- Self-Control
- Confidence
- Discipline
- Indomitable spirit

What to Wear
For beginners, Loose-fitting or comfortable workout clothing is recommended. Footwear must be removed before entering the dojang (training studio). Returning students must wear their uniform and belt.

Schedule & Classes
The first class for the Fall 2013 semester started on Monday, January 27, 2014, at 7:30pm, in Multipurpose Room 1 (lower level) of the Simon Recreation Center.
Classes are held Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30pm - 9:00pm in the Simon Recreation Center (Multipurpose Room 1, lower level) during the academic Fall and Spring semesters. Class will not be held if the university is closed.

Understanding that most college students cannot afford the standard $70-$150/month for martial arts lessons, SLU Karate is proud to offer affordable, cheap classes. Try us out first! The first 3 weeks of classes are free, no-obligation training sessions for new students to check out the club. Dues will be collected following this grace period.
  • For beginners (white belts & blue belts), dues are $95/semester. Includes dues and full uniform/belt/basic sparring gear (a $122 value).
  • For returning students, green belts and above: dues are $50/semester.
