Recipe adapted from Gayle at

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter

3/4 cup light corn syrup

2 cups half and half

1 teaspoon vanilla

Butter 8 inch square baking pan.

Combine all ingredients except vanilla in large, heavy saucepan.  Bring to boil over medium high heat, stirring often.  Watch carefully as the mixture begins to thicken and darken...stirring constantly till your candy thermometer reaches 245º.  Don't worry if this takes a LONG patient. Remove from heat and add vanilla.

Immediately pour into prepared pan.  Cool.

Cut into squares and wrap in wax paper.  Store in tin or freeze.
