Dear Bowie Families,

The City Council of Bowie is exploring the possibility of building a new two-sheet ice facility within the budget for next year, 2015.  After extensive research it was determined that two sheets of ice would be included in the planned new sports complex.  However, it is not on the budget as of now, and in fact the city is planning to spend a great deal of money to repair our floor and replace dasher boards.  This would likely guarantee that ice would not be included in the new facility.

A two sheet facility would allow us to expand our programs, offer public and freestyle sessions at more convenient times and add sessions to the weekends.  Our group lesson program could continue to grow possibly allowing the adult synchro, hockey, team synchro and production classes to have more time, eliminating the need to share the ice.

We would also be able to host larger events, and the Valentine's competition could be scheduled over two days. I don't think anyone will miss the 15 hour competition days!  In addition the rink would not need to shut down in May and June.  Our lesson schedules could remain more consistent and the skaters will not need to travel further to continue training in the "of months".

The Bowie ISI Team and Bowie Figure Skating Team needs you to be a vocal member of the club, by emailing and calling the Mayor and Council Members. In your email, please thank those who already support the two-sheet ice rink and urge others to support the two-sheet ice rink. Inform them of the crowded classes, shared team ice, long competition days, inability to secure ice for a USFS Collegiate Competition, inability to secure ice for training seminars for skaters and coaches, lack of practice time after work and school hours, and any other comments you can make to help convince the City Council to include a new facility in next year's budget.

Please share your positive experiences at other multiple sheet ice facilities and the opportunities our kids would gain with a new facility. There are many activities we could add to our program if we had the ice time for them: Expanded Adult Programs, USFS Competitions, Ice Dance Classes, Adult Sessions,  Collegiate Skating, Women's and Adult League Hockey

Finally, again please thank them for their support.

The next two budget meetings are Monday, April 21 and Monday, May 5, both start at 8:00 PM and are held at Bowie City Hall. We MUST have a large show of support from Bowie Families  to help make this a reality. We are looking for families that are residents of Bowie to speak in support of the two-sheet ice rink at the meetings. Those that wish to speak will need to register with the City Clerk when arriving for the meeting. You must sign up to speak prior to the 8:00 pm meeting start.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Christine Wilson Brinton @ chris@sk8brinton.com

Note: Even if you cannot attend the meeting, please make your wishes know by emailing the Mayor.  Contact info below.

Thank you for your assistance.
