Horn Coral:  Heliophyllum halli

Middle Devonian Onandaga Limestone Formation

Western New York

The Onandaga Limestone underlies much of Western New York and is quarried throughout the region.  Rich in marine fossils and rich petroleum deposits from the 350 million year old Devonian Period... the Onandaga also has several volcanic ash layers and some of the remains of the world's first sharklike fishes.   The Horn Coral in the photo above was collected from quarried material near Buffalo New York and is about 18 inches around its semicircular circumference.
