Aloha & Welcome to the 36th Annual Summer Institute for Union Women!

The Hawai'i local planning committee welcomes our union sisters from the western United States and Canada to Honolulu, Hawai'i for SIUW 2017. Please join us for four days of sisterhood, education, skill building, solidarity and fun. The SIUW celebrates the solidarity of union women and crosses the boundaries of age, race, occupation and nation. We invite all union women whether their union is independent, affiliated with the AFL-CIO, or affiliated with another labor organization.

The theme this year is: "Continuing the Legacy: Responding with Direction, Unity & Strength". Union women in Hawai'i and everywhere have a proud history of resistance, resilience, and focus in formulating and organizing a unified response to threats on workers' rights and women's rights. This institute will focus on providing union women with opportunities to network and share their expertise, while also a providing content and practical strategies useful for informed response

Today, the right to bargain collectively for a voice is under organized attack. Now more than ever, it is important to take advantage of every opportunity to increase your knowledge, make connections, and improve skills through labor educational programs.

This decades-old institute uses a variety of learning approaches. Working women enjoy the expertise of experienced organizers and labor leadership, in addition to learning about new campaigns and methods of internal and external organizing. The in-depth multi-day core classes hone skills, deepen knowledge, and build relationships. One-day workshops focus on specific skills, information, or issues. Other activities enable women to work together and learn from each other.

Class content and discussions are for every level for women in unions, from beginner to advanced. The instructors are experienced, dynamic, and highly respected labor educators from unions and universities who understand the importance of using a hands-on, interactive educational approach. All classes are taught in a supportive environment to enable women to network and safely share ideas, strategies, information, and experiences.
