New Year’s Greetings!!

Our winter hiking schedule is attached.  Though most of these “hikes” are road walks, we’ve discovered that they can be very enjoyable: many have sweeping views; it can be crisp and cold to start, sometimes with rime-covered plants and trees glistening in winter’s sun; they provide good exercise, camaraderie, and even an out-to-lunch date!  As always, please do remember to check your email the day before or the morning of a hike.  Though we try to never cancel, we occasionally need to change the venue and/or meeting place for a particular day’s outing, or sometimes just send a special note.

Hard to believe, but we actually had to change the venue for the first hike on the fall schedule because of early snow on the mountain!  In mid-November we also were thwarted by lingering snow and icy conditions and then ironically, on December 16th, our hoped-for snowshoe/cross-country ski outing in Sand Flat had to be changed due to not enough snow!!

Fall seemed particularly glorious this year though.  The colors were lovely, and we were able to appreciate our beautiful and varied county from many different perspectives.  Our special thanks to hikers who planned and led three of our hikes: Will McClain (Goosenest), Connie Marmet (Cabin Creek/Squaw Creek Trail), and Debbie Depree (Little Shasta Valley, and she even surprised us by arranging access to the historic Little Shasta Church).  You are all appreciated!!!

We’ve had fantastic response to our outings, and have a great group of fellow Meanderers.  We thank-you for your friendship and support, wish you all the very best for 2012, and remember:

Generally our hikes are from 5-6 miles total and most are such that you can hike for as long a time or as far as you wish and then back-track to the trailhead. The only caveat is that you’ll either need to have your own vehicle, or have coordinated with your driver if you’re ride-sharing. While car-pooling is encouraged, since the meeting points for the hikes are at a number of different locations it is difficult to set predetermined places and times for car-poolers to meet. It seems like the best way to handle the situation is for hikers to contact other possible participants in their area and make appropriate arrangements.
