The Simulcast Lectures Podium Project was conceptualized on February 21, 2010 by James McCloskey et al.

The project team is creating a user friendly touch screen podium. The podium accepts video output from a presenter's laptop and then displays the output on a touch screen. The presenter is allowed to make pen annotations onto the screen, which are then sent to the projector. The slides from the presenter, the annotations and the audio will be recorded as a video and can be uploaded to our web system. Students can access the recorded lectures on our web system and add their own notes to that lecture and share their notes with fellow students.

The key benefits, compared to similar solutions, are price and usability. The price per podium is about $600. The main usability feature is that the presenter does not need to install any additional hardware or software for their personal computer systems. The students are not only able to get the slides overlaid with the audio, but also the annotations from the presenter and what the presenter is highlighting.

First, we want to implement the system at the University of California, San Diego. We will start with one podium in one class room in order to gain experience with the product. After that, we plan to expand to different schools like University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles and Stanford.
