Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Do my students have to be good improvisers to make the band?

A: Students do not have to be great improvisers, but those wanting to be selected to typical solo chairs (Lead tenor, lead alto, Trumpet 2, Trombone 2), a certain amount of comfort and experience would help in that student being selected.

Q: When do I have to pay the $35? Do I pay it for each student nominated?

A: I ask that payment be sent only when your student is selected. Students and directors will be notified no later than October 20th. Payment is not required for those students who are not selected.

Q: How do you choose the students who make the band?

A: I put a lot of value in your (directors’) opinion and written statements of your students. Please realize that this is a state wide honor band, and that you should evaluate your students in that manner. Also know that I will try and select students from as wide a geographic range as possible, so ideally, we will have 15-20 schools represented for this great educational day!

Q: Does my drummer have to bring his/her own drum set?

A: No. The selected drummers will use the Simpson College drum set.

Q: Does my bass player have to bring his/her own bass?

A: Yes. Please bring both electric and/or acoustic basses. A bass amp (and guitar amp) will be provided by Simpson College. Vibes will also be provided.

Q: I need to get some work done during the day. Is there WiFi that I can use?

A: Yes. Please bring your laptops and I will have instructions ready on how to do this.
