Dr. Benoit holds degrees in trombone performance (B.M.-1985, Louisiana State University) andmusic theory (M.M.-1987, Ph.D.-1994, University of Texas at Austin). As a music theorist, Dr. Benoit has presented papers on Luigi Dallapicolla's twelve-tone music and on Schenkerian theory at conferences in the United States and Canada.
As a trombonist, Dr. Benoit has been a member of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera orchestra, the Texas Brass Quintet, and the Austin Jazz Orchestra. His trombone teachers include Larry Campbell (LSU), Donald Knaub (UT-Austin), and George Krem. Dr. Benoit is presently the trombonist with the Party Gras Classic Jazz Band and the Festival Brass Quintet. He is also the leader, musical arranger, and trombonist in the Ballyhoo Foxtrot Orchestra, a period ensemble that performs the jazz and popular music of the 1910s and 1920s.
