 How it works... 

 

1/. A tooth of the escape-wheel rests on the outside of the Virgule.

 

 

 

2/. The tooth drops into the Virgule - it is now on the axis of the Balance, and stays put...

3/. As the tooth leaves the Virgule, it sweeps along the 'tail' of the Comma, giving the impulsion.
