Son Goku is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama and descendant of the fighting Saiyan race. He is the husband of Chi Chi, father of two sons, Gohan and Goten, the grandfather of Pan, and later great-great grandfather of Goku Jr. Goku is a defender of Earth and informally leads the Z-Senshi. Throughout his life, he trains hard and strives to be the greatest fighter possible, while at the same time using his amazing strength and skills to uphold peace. These qualities make him the perfect example of a hero, though not necessarily the perfect role model, due to his lack of education.

Born sometime in 737 Age on Planet Vegeta, during a time of great turmoil. Following a Saiyan custom, Goku was sent as a baby to planet Earth, in order to defeat its inhabitants and clear the planet for its future sale. As Earth's inhabitants were thought to be weak, a baby Saiyan was seen as enough for the task, specially after transforming into a Oozaru by Earth's moon. Goku's father, a low-class Saiyan warrior named Bardock, perished in his home planet's destruction, shortly after Goku's departure, and his older brother Raditz was nowhere to be seen. However, an injury to his head made his Saiyan characteristics disappear, and Goku grew up as a kind-hearted Earthling because of his life with his adoptive parent, Grandpa Gohan.

He lived alone following his grandpa's death, but when Bulma appeared he began an unknown adventure. She appreciated his strength, and so they set out on a journey to gather the dragonballs, which ultimately led to him meeting his master Kame-sennin, his good rivals Kuririn, Piccolo, and Vegeta, and many others, and together with his friends he grew up. His first battle where death was on the line was against Piccolo Daimao, but he managed to win with his natural talent, never-say-never spirit, and the help of his friends. Afterwards, the setting of his battles surpassed the level of the Tenkaichi Budokai, and took on a cosmic scope. He came to fight with strong opponents such as Freeza and Majin Buu, which never failed to stir up his Saiyan blood. After marrying Chi-Chi and having a son named Gohan, he took Gohan to Kame House.

Later he meets his brother, Raditz, and learns the secret of his origins. Goku, who hated the brutality of the Saiyans, decides to fight as Goku of Earth. Goku wants to fight strong opponents because it is in his Saiyan blood. He loves fighting so much that the stronger the opponent, the more excited he becomes.

He died for the first time fighting Raditz, and later died during the battle with Cell when Cell self-destructed. By continuing to appear even while dead, and by being restored to life even after dying, he always kept on being at the center of the story. During the events of Dragon Ball Super, Goku fought the God of Destruction Beerus, the revived Freeza, participated in the Universe 6 Tournament and battled the time-distorted Zamasu. Currently, he is right in the middle of training Uub. In DBGT, he sets out with Pan and Trunks to search for the Black Star Dragon Balls scattered in space.

Even though his body has become smaller, his strength is the same, and he can beat down any enemy. When he was sealed in the Underworld he easily defeated the plans of the formerly formidable Cell and Freeza. On the surface his personality has not changed, but is it just imagination that because he now looks like a child it makes the things he do look childish? In the end after defeating Bebi, Super 17, and the Evil Shenlongs, he flew off with Shenlong, thus not seen for 100 years.
