SIDNEY SAINT JAMES...AND THE CURSE OF COBBLESMITH COVE
CHAPTER 0NE
FEBRUARY 14, 2017
CHAPTER ONE
"Another teen's went missing. A fourth teen has been reported missing from CobbleSmith Cove in as many weeks. There are baffling circumstances surrounding these missing teens. The bloodstains found at each home, and the inverted cross, drawn out in blood on each of the teens front doors, makes this a very scary story. The fact that all the missing teens were from prominent families...families of the founding fathers of CobbleSmith Cove, may hold some truth to the towns-rumor...'There is a curse on the town. A curse that started with the town's forefathers.' Details on the noonday news."
The television blared the news as Sidney turned to look at the somber face of the newscaster. She swiftly turned her head back in the direction her body was heading, as her long curly fiery-red hair, bounced against her deeply caramel-colored freckled face. She was already late for breakfast, and this troubling news almost made her want to skip the breakfast altogether.
Emme Blu'Rose, Paul WhiteStone, MaryBeth French...all close friends of Sidney...all...now missing! Her heart dropped, as she wondered, "Who the missing fourth teen was?"
Sidney walked into the kitchen. Her parent, Henry, and Sarah were sitting at the kitchen table looking at her as she walked in, with impatient stares that said, "Sit down and eat your breakfast!"
"Mom...can I just take some fruit and eat a good lunch?"
"No Sidney! You need a well-balanced breakfast."
"Dad...can you take me to school? If I eat breakfast...I'll be late." Sarah looked at Sidney in disbelief, as she watches her sweet-talk her father into getting her way.
"Alright Sidney, but take some toast and bacon. You can eat it in the car if that's alright with your mother." Henry stated as he rose from his chair, pushed it back from the kitchen table...and headed out the kitchen door towards his car.
Sarah smiled; she could never stay upset with Sidney for too long. She had all of her mother's ways. She was her mother's daughter alright...and besides that...she was a good kid...maybe just a little bit too high-spirited for her thirteen years and five-feet frame.
Sidney grabbed a paper towel. Jammed two pieces of toast and four crisp pieces of bacon between it, and scooped up her red and black backpack, as she ran out the back door to her father's black Crown Victoria. She loved that car. It was big, roomy, and could hold all of her close friends. She liked her mother's new candy-apple-red Mercedes too, but she loved her father's car.
"Come on dad...let's get started. I'm gonna be late. Love you mom." Yelled Sidney, as she poked her head out the car window.
"Love you back," Sarah called out, as the car door slammed. Before Sarah's words were out, Henry had the car in gear and was backing out the driveway.
"Dad...can we stop and pick up Happi? I told her we would. It's on the way, and we drive right by her house if you turn on Mulberry Road...please dad."
Henry looked in the rear-view mirror at Sidney and sighed. He knew it was useless to refuse her. With a slight smile, he answered, "Okay baby...but if you're late for school...it's your fault, and you will be grounded. Do you hear me, Sidney?"
"Yes, dad...I hear you. But I won't be late." Sidney thought to herself...and if I am late...you won't know about it.
Just as she predicted...there was Happi, standing on the corner of Mulberry Road and Honey Suckle Lane. Henry pulled his Crown Victoria up to the curb, Happi ran up to the opened door and jumped in.
"Hi, Mr. Saint James," Happi exclaimed excitedly, as she settled into the back seat next to Happi. Sidney nudged Happi in her side. With a questioning look, Happi turned to Sidney,"What's going on?" She asked in a whisper.
Sidney squeezed her hand, which meant; don't say anything, and not now. Happi promptly became silent. "Dad I may be late coming home from school today. I need to go to the library. We have a report due on Monday."
"Well, Sidney today is Friday, can't you go to the library during the weekend? After all, your mother and I wanted you to babysit Jacob. We're invited out to the WigglesWurth's...and I can't refuse at this late date."
"Dad please, I can still babysit, it's just that I will be a little late. Please, dad...please...pleeease!"
"Sidney...how long did you know about this assignment? Why didn't you say something this morning to your mom before you left the house?"
"I forgot."
Just then, the car pulled up in front of the PrimRose Valley Christian Academy. Before Henry could turn his head to instruct Sidney about the library, she was slamming the car door, and running up the school steps, with Happi following close behind. The last bell rang. The school day had started.
"See you this evening dad." Trailed behind Sidney, as she ran through the big red double doors.
"Bye Sidney." Muttered Henry as the car pulled from the curb. He knew once again Sidney's had her way. He knew he was going to be late for the invitation to the WigglesWurth's.
As they walked to their homerooms...Sidney turned to Happi with a questioning look. "Happi did you hear the news this morning? Do you know another teen is missing? Who do you think it is?"
Happi looked at Sidney, lowered her long black eyelashes, and hesitated as she ran her slender fingers through her long black braids. She really didn't want to answer. She looked deep into Sidney's eyes and spoke softly. "It's John."
"John who?" Sidney's puzzled look...quickly turned to fear.
"Your John!"
"My John! No! Not my John!" Sidney looked at Happi with eyes that had become as big as saucers.
"No!...Not my John! How do you even know that it is John? They didn't say their name on the news. They didn't say who it was."
"Sidney...his mom called my mom last night...and she also called your mom...but your line was busy."
"Yeah...my mom was on the phone for hours on a long distance call. You know my mom's a lawyer, and she does a lot of work from home. That's probably why John's mom couldn't get through."
"Some of the town's people are saying, 'That there really is a town curse...and they are saying those teens that are missing, have something to do with it.' I don't know...I don't know if it is true, or not. All I do know is that John, Emme, Paul, and MaryBeth didn't run away. Their parents have lived here forever, and if they didn't run away...then where are they?"
Sidney tried to push down the fear...but she knew Happi was right...and if she was right...then something was wrong...terribly wrong in CobbleSmith Cove. So where were they? Sidney knew she had to get to the bottom of this.
"Happi...do you think there really could be a curse on CobbleSmith Cove?"
"I don't know Sidney...but something is wrong."
"Let's go talk to John's mom."
"Okay!"
"I have some time after school. I told my dad I would be at the library...but I'll go on the internet instead."
The school was in a state of hysterical turmoil. There were all kinds of rumors floating around school. Some said, "The teens were into witchcraft." Some said, "They were into satanism." Some said, "It was revenge." Some said, "It was a hoax...since it was so near Halloween." Sidney took it all in...but she was not fooled...she knew better!
