Welcome! Project Cornerstone -ABC Reader

Schallenberger Elementary School: Project Cornerstone

What is Project Cornerstone?

Project Cornerstone is a YMCA of Silicon Valley Initiative. The goal of Project Cornerstone is to help all children and teens in Silicon Valley feel valued, respected and known and to build a community where all adults support children and teenagers so that they thrive.

Project Cornerstone works with more than 400 Bay Area schools and community partners to help individuals and communities build a web of support around young people so that they grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults.

Through devoted, caring adults who volunteer to read to and interact with children and teens at local schools, Project Cornerstone seeks to teach and strengthen the "Developmental Assets" of all children and teens in our community. Developmental Assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences that help children and teens thrive. Young people with high asset levels are most likely to make healthy choices, while those with lower asset levels are more likely to get involved with negative or risky behaviors like violence, trouble in school, drug and alcohol use and more

What is an ABC Reader?

Schallenberger Elementary School has been an active participant in Project Cornerstone for years but we cannot do it without our fantastic ABC (Asset Building Champions) Reader Volunteers.

Our volunteer ABC Readers make eight classroom presentations over the course of the school year, usually stopping in once a month from September to May.

Each presentation requires only about two hours of your time (typically one hour to prepare, one hour to present).

  • Presentation dates and times will be selected by volunteers in consultation with the classroom teacher.
  • All books and lesson plans are provided and are available in the Schallenberger library; many are also available online making prep easier.
  • Every classroom needs a volunteer...or two!  Parents, Guardians, Grandparents, Aunts/Uncles, older siblings, community members, future Teachers/Counselors and Schallenberger alumni are encouraged to consider this wonderful opportunity.
  • Interested in volunteering?  Please visit our "Getting started with PC" webpage.
