Register NOW for the Shorewood Hills Elementary School Chess Club!
The Shorewood Hills Elementary School Chess Club is open to all Shorewood School students in kindergarten through 5th grade and of all chess abilities, beginning to advanced. Beginners will be taught the rules of chess through in-class instruction, problem-solving, and peer play. Intermediate and advanced players will develop their game play and tactics through in-class instruction, written problems, and peer play.
In previous years, the club filled up quickly and we had to turn away many students. To address this issue, this year we will have two sessions for Chess Club:
Parents should register their children for only one session as soon as possible, as space is limited to 35 students per session.
Chess club will run on Monday evenings from 6 - 7 pm in the Shorewood School library. The Fall Beginner session will start in mid-September and end in December. The Spring Experienced session will start in late January and end in early April. We anticipate 10 - 12 meetings per session and will announce dates via email once they are set.
Chess Club is led by FIDE (The World Chess Federation) Master Alex Betaneli, who was the Wisconsin state champion in 2000, 2001, 2005, and 2012. He frequently writes for Chess Life, the most widely read American chess magazine. Alex’s students consistently win titles at both state and national levels. In addition, two other highly rated and experienced chess instructors accompany Alex to each session. Parental volunteer Jack Koziol organizes the club for students and the PTO to ensure a safe and fun environment for learning chess.
Fees for joining Chess Club are $125. This year, we have a new logo for the Chess Club and the option to purchase a t-shirt with the logo for $19 as well. Parents should bring a check payable to the Shorewood Hills PTO to the first meeting. You can register your student for the club by accessing this URL: bit.ly/2aVwwla
