Player of the Year: Shane Bent, Senior, MB, Southern Regional
Senior middle blocker, Shane Bent, a three year varsity starter for Southern Regional, helped lead the Rams to consecutive state titles in 2016 and 2017. This season he sparked the Rams offense notching 244 kills and moved up to seventh all-time on the career kills leaderboard at Southern. He also lead a strong defensive effort up front with 62 blocks on the year, moving to third all-time for career blocks at Southern Regional. Behind the strong play of Bent, the Rams did not lose a single match in Shore Conference play this season, won the A-South Division Title, the Shore Conference Title, the South State Sectional Championship, and knocked off ten different opponents ranked in the state top twenty. Bent plans to attend Santa Barbara City College in the fall where he will study kinesiology. Congratulations, Shane, on an outstanding season and a brilliant high school athletics career.
Coach of the Year: Eric Maxwell, Southern Regional
Coach Eric Maxwell guided his Southern Regional Rams to a 37-5 overall record this past spring with a perfect 18-0 run against Shore Conference opponents in the 2018 campaign. This season, Maxwell’s 18th at the helm, the Rams captured the A-South divisional title, brought home their 9th Shore Conference title, and won the South State Sectional Title in sweeping fashion. Although they came up just short in what was one of the best state title matches in recent memory, the Rams have had a strong tradition of success under Maxwell’s guidance winning a record 6 New Jersey State Titles. Congratulations to 2018 SVCA Coach of the Year, Eric Maxwell.
