16th Annual Shoreline Math Olympiad  Saturday March 8th, 2014

Registration has begun for the 2014 Shoreline Math Olympiad competition to be held on Saturday March 8th at Shoreline Community College.  We expect representation again from EVERY private and public school in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park !                                                                                                Students should check in with their math coaches and get their teams of four together. Coaches packets were mailed on 1-21-14 to schools.   For event details, check out the Event Details 2014 link.

Every team will need one parent chaperone, but other parents and high school students are encouraged to volunteer! This is an event that relies heavily on volunteers! We need volunteers the day of the event to be in the scoring room, proctor tests in the classrooms, assist with concessions, check in teams, and more. Let your school math coach know if you can help or fill out the online volunteer form.  See the link to the left of this page for more details.  If you are are interested in helping to put on this rewarding community event by being a member of the Planning team, please contact Committee Chair, Lisa McDonald at: Lisa_mcd@comcast.net.

Shoreline Math Olympiad receives Community Recognition Award in May 2013
Shoreline Math Olympiad was among those honored by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) at its Community Recognition Awards luncheon held May 17, 2013 at the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Renton.
Each year, WASA 110, which includes Shoreline, holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders nominated by their respective districts.

Representing Shoreline Math Olympiad at the event were Lisa McDonald, Suzanne Gugger, Jacqui Rublee, Amy Stapleton, Catherine Thompson, and Santosh Zachariach, along with Superintendent Sue Walker and Ellen Kaje, director of ELL, Title I, LAP, and Highly Capable Programs.

Shoreline Math Olympiad was recognized for this award because the event has been bringing together students in grades 4 to 8 from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park for fun, friendly competition and learning for the past 15 years. The guiding force of Shoreline Math Olympiad for the past 10 years has been committee chair Lisa McDonald, a Shoreline Schools parent who has given thousands of hours of her time to this effort. Each year Lisa brings together her planning team of community volunteers and expertly manages the event, which begins at the school level with Math Olympiad clubs that encourage students to learn challenging, above grade-level math concepts. To view the complete article go to:http://www.shorelineschools.org/news/release.php?releasesid=1505.

About SMO:
This site will connect students, parents, teachers and our sponsors to important event information. The Shoreline Math Olympiad math competition is held annually in March for 4th-8th grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, Washington. It is sponsored by the Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Shoreline Community College and local sponsors. Since 2011, the event served over 700 "Mathletes". More than 150 volunteers assist with the event. Shoreline Math Olympiad awards medals to the top 40% of the individuals participating, and the top 60% of teams participating. We do not break ties. If there are many award winners starting at 1st place, medals for the top 40% or 60% students will vary. Some categories may only award medals to the 4th place finishers and other categories will award medals through 7th place. For details about the 2013 competition, photos, test copies and award winners have been posted on the "SMO 2013" linked page.

Math Clubs and Math Olympiad programs:                           Several Shoreline school district schools host Math Clubs to encourage students to learn challenging, above grade level math concepts. These concepts are often presented in a fun way. Teachers and parent volunteers coordinate Math Clubs which can range from small group work to full classroom settings. Students are presented with appropriate math problems that challenge each grade level. Most programs start meeting in the fall and conclude at the competitions held in the spring. Most programs give homework to the "Mathletes" during the week. Typically programs have a quiz day at the end of each month to give the kids a chance to use their skills choose to participate in the National Math Olympiad program (MOEMS) also give their students five monthly contests from November to March that provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of math. The Shoreline Math Olympiad brought together all the District teams and area private schools for competition. Some students will also participate in the Washington State Math Championships held in Blaine later in the spring or at regional competitions such as the Washington State Math championship in Blaine, and Math is Cool events. See the Math Competitions page for details. To contact a math coach for your local school, please go to "Coaches" tab under "Coaches Corner" page.
