It’s Christmas time so Shoals Master Gardeners will once again gather at the Underwood-Petersville Community Center to pat ourselves on the back for the contributions made in the community this year, to give thanks for being able to do so, and to just enjoy celebrating Christmas together.
Due to the positive response to last year’s food, it will once again be provided by Jill’s Sweet Memories. The menu will include a wide variety of finger foods including desserts.

Directions to the Community Center:
From Cox Creek Parkway go north on Chisolm Road (Hwy 17) 2.2 miles
At the 2nd stop light turn left on County Road 7 (Mapco on corner)
Drive .9 miles on County Road 7.
The community center will be on your right.

This month’s SMG meeting will be a combination of three important events:  Celebrating with the Master Gardener class of 2017 the successful completion of their class work and volunteer hours and observing their graduation.  In addition to welcoming the new Master Gardeners, we will be electing new officers and welcoming them as our leaders. 

We will celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional Thanksgiving meal.  Turkey and dressing will be provided by Pop’s BBQ.  SMG members whose last name starts with A-L are asked to bring side dishes or bread.  The rest are assigned desserts.  Reminders: Annual membership dues of $25 can be paid at the meeting.  You may also pay the fee for the Christmas Party which is $10 per person.

It is time to relax and enjoy a picnic in the St. Florian Park. The food will again be provided by Pop’s BBQ. There is no charge for the meal. Take home plates will be available for purchase. Taylor Reeder will make a short presentation on the advanced master gardener program.

The June SMG monthly meeting program will be a demonstration on Hypertufa / Papercrete making. Our on Peggie Lazenby and H.L. Noah will show their expertise, while Michael Thomason will show what little he knows about this art. So come and enjoy the fun as we learn about this art of plant container making. It will be a demonstration of sorts under the shed out behind the church so bring a lawn chair. We will move to the shed after our lunch and business meeting.

The January meeting will be dedicated to acknowledgment of the outstanding work of individual master gardeners.  Awards will be presented to those persons nominated by the membership as well as those selected by the awards committee based on the Shoals Master Gardener Award Criteria. Please note the change in date and time.   January meeting has been changed from the 17th to the 24th.  A new Master Gardener class will start on January 24th and run through May.   During this time monthly meetings will begin at 12:30 to accommodate the participants.

Can you believe it is Christmas season already? It’s time to celebrate with fellow Master Gardeners and reflect on the many projects that were accomplished by everyone working together this year. The hospitality committee, specifically Jacqueline Bretherick and Pam Belew, worked hard to secure a location and food for the event. The site will be the Underwood-Petersville Community Center. The food will be catered by Jill’s Sweet Memories. The menu will include a wide variety of finger foods including some special desserts.

Graduation Time!  It is time to welcome the Master Gardener class of 2016 as official Master Gardeners and to thank them for their many hours spent helping with our projects. The graduation ceremony will be conducted at our upcoming meeting. In addition, Cam Jones, a member of this class, will present a short program on the Saint Andrew Gleaning Project.  Our lunch will once again be a Thanksgiving feast. Turkey and dressing will be provided so all members should bring a side dish or dessert. 

September 20, 2016 @ 11:00 A.M. Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL.  The SMG September meeting program will focus on not only how to divide plants but also how to pot them up by five of our own very talented Shoals Master Gardeners.

Dee Hubbert will show how to divide daylilies, Margie Anderton will cover iris'(bearded, Louisiana, siberian), Barbara Wilson will cover hostas, Sarah Haggstrom will cover peonies and Martha Berryhill will cover hellebores. Come out and support these Master Gardeners as they provide us an educational opportunity.

August 16, 2016 11:00 A.M. Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL.  The SMG August Monthly meeting will feature Carol Reese, Ornamental Horticulture Specialist with UT Extension in Jackson, Tn. Her topic: A BOTANICAL VERSION OF PEYTON PLACE aka Sex and the Single Pistil or Sex in the Garden. Her job for the last 20 years has been to keep the green industry professionals up to date with an increasingly savvy gardening clientele. Her Horticulture degrees are from Mississippi State where she taught  classes in plant materials and landscape design. She is a contributor to several garden magazines, and writes a weekly gardening and nature column for the Jackson Sun in Jackson, TN.

July 19, 2016 @ 11:00 A.M. Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL. Mr. Paul Graham, Grounds Supervisor for UNA will present the July program on landscape design of outdoor classrooms. Since several of the SMG projects are partnered with schools, his ideas should prove to be very helpful. The hospitality committee is asking that our lunch items be “Straight From the Garden” . Many of you have asked what is legal for reporting hours. Taylor will be going over the categories and clarifying what we can and can not claim as reporting hours. She will also be introducing us to some free apps we can use. Come join us and bring your questions as she updates us on the rules and regulations for reporting hours.

April 19, 2016 @ 12:30 A.M. Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL.  The SMG April Monthly meeting will feature  "Lasagna Gardening."  Colleen McChesney is our featured speaker. She is a second year Lafayette County Mississippi Master Gardener. Colleen's love of gardening began at an early age with guidance from her parents and grandparents. She has used the "Lasagna Gardening" technique for about 20 years. Come join us as she shares her wealth of knowledge on this topic.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015 @ 12:00 noon to 2 pm, 2002 at Locust Hill Mansion, 209 S. Cave St, Tuscumbia, AL.  
The December SMG Monthly Meeting will be held at one of the most historic properties in the Shoals. Built in 1823, it is the oldest surviving brick home in Alabama and life within that home is lovingly desiccated by Mary Wallace Kirk (1889-1978) in her book "Locust Hill." She lived there over 80 years.

Nov. 17, 2015 @ 11:00 A.M. at Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL.  Celebrate with the 2015 intern class graduation and at the same time we will be enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Turkey and dressing will be provided, so plan to bring a dish or dessert to complement our feast. Drinks also provided. Dues should be paid at this meeting. Annual dues are $25. Fee for our Christmas Meeting meal at the Locust Hill Mansion is $10.00. Bring salads with meat, tossed salads, congealed salads or salads with fruits to share. Those who do not garden might bring a bread or dessert. Drinks will be provided. Barbara Wilson will show us how to make a wonderful flower arrangement.

May 14, 2015 @ 11:00 A.M. at Woodmont Baptist Church-East Campus, 2002 Darby Drive, Florence, AL.  Harvey Cotton, former head of the Huntsville Botanical Gardens will be our guest speaker for this month. Plants Sale time is here! Get those plants to the nursery for printing and tagging so Arts Alive will be overflowing with beautiful, healthy plants. (This is a major fundraiser for SMG. Arts Alive is May 16-17.) We will share a "Brunch" meal. Please bring a favorite brunch dish.

Sept 18, 2014 @ Lunch at 11:00 A.M. Home of Margie Anderton, 271 CR 68, Killen, AL.  Come and join in the experience of trapping, banding and learning about the wonderful world of hummingbirds! Bring sack lunch( and extra drinks if you wish)and a chair to sit in the shade!  Early trapping will begin at 8:30 and go until around 11:00 when we will all have lunch with drinks provided. We will enjoy a presentation on the wonderful invention DIG RIG by Chris Haddock! Bring money or checkbook because you’ll have to have one of these neat inventions for your shovel ($6.95) May save you a broken foot! The price of admission to the hummingbird show is a sack of sugar for Bob! We will have a short meeting afterwards.

The topic will be "Japanese Maples: the Aristocrat of Trees." Guest speaker, David Doggett of Birmingham, will present images of different cultivars of Japanese maples and how best to grow them. His presentation also includes a discussion of grafting and why this is the most popular method of propagating Japanese maples. There will be handouts describing proper placement and care of Japanese maples.

Lunch will be Pot-Luck, a good opportunity for you to prepare dishes from fresh garden vegetables. The Hospitality Committee will provide drinks.  Bring your surplus veggies to the meeting to share with others!

Our speakers will be Sarah Haggstrom and Judy Haugseth. They will be speaking on Hydrangea Propagation: a hands-on workshop at McFarland Park, Pavilion #1. Bring your pruning shears, rooting harm one, gloves and a 3"x3" pot. Be sure to attend even if you don't have all items requested, we will have extra supplies to share.

The Hospitality Committee will provide drinks & cookies. Picnic tables are available but, it is recommended that you bring your on chair.  See you down by the beautiful Tennessee River!

The Hospitality Committee has requested we begin the meetings by having our meal together as the first order of business. This way our hot foods items will still be fresh and warm. The 2013 interns will now be contributing dishes to our meal. Lunch will be Potluck with drinks provided.

Intern Graduation/Thanksgiving Meal  The turkey & dressing will be provided by Chris Becker with the help of Kaye Hillis and Francine Creecy. Members need to bring their favorite sides & desserts. Please bring extra servings for the Intern's guest. Hospitality will be serving and providing drinks.

Join us to learn how this tiny bird prepares for the long migratory journey to Central America where it spends the winter. There will be handouts for those attending plus a presentation of Melissa's amazing photography. The hospitality Committee suggest "Potluck" without guidelines...please bring a dish of your choice. Drinks will be provided.
