3Hockman, Martha Jane Motter - obituary, Cherokee: Cherokee, Oklahoma Republican, Friday, June 11, 1926, Vol. XXIV, No. 50. "Funeral for Mrs. Hockman Visited by Many Friends – Much Beloved Cherokee Woman Passes to Reward This Week – Life Activity Taken as Text – Sickness of Month Fatal to Former W.C.T.U. Worker
--- Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Hockman who died after a brief illness, Tuesday morning about 7:30 o'clock, were held at the Christian Church, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Of the large crowd present for the service a greater portion were members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the organization Mrs. Hockman led for almost six years.
--- In the beginning of his address for the occasion, Rev. Cecil E. Berry stated that this was one of the few times that the life of the deceased could be taken as the funeral sermon. He therefore told of incidents in the life of Mrs. Hockman which showed the sacrifices she made that others might enjoy life more fully.
--- Mrs. Hockman found great joy in religious leadership and it was in religious activity of one kind and another that she found her greatest joy. An incident which showed , in a small way, her interest in the welfare of others was recited.
--- After being taken to the hospital about a week previous to her death, her many friends sent a wealth of flowers to the sick room. It was the request of Mrs. Hockman that these flowers be divided and sent to others then confined to the hospital. She also requested that the W.C.T.U. in which she had found great happiness, should not spend any of the money from its treasury in buying flowers for her.
--- It was due to these requests that the greater portion of the abundance of beautiful flowers which buried the casket at the service were plucked from the gardens of her friends.
--- Mrs. Hockman's obituary in which the life's work and interest of Mrs. Hockman is depicted is printed here as it was read at the service.
--- Mattie Jane Motter Hockman was born March 28, 1873, in Wisconsin to Mr. and Mrs. James G. Motter. She departed this life June 8, 1926, at 7:25 AM at the age of 53 years, 2 months, and 11 days.
--- At the age of 8 years she moved with her parents to the state of Nebraska, where she lived until 1901.
--- She was married, March 28, 1894, to Mr. George L. Hockman, at Dorchester, Nebraska. To this union 6 children were born; 3 boys; James N. Hockman, of San Angelo, Texas; Cleon C. Hockman, of Pierre, South Dakota; and Paul Leroy Hockman, at home in Cherokee; and 3 girls; Julia E. Hockman; Margurite M. Hockman; and Gertrude B. Hockman, all at home.
--- Mr. and Mrs. Hockman moved from Nebraska to Oklahoma in 1901, locating near Byron; and moved to Cherokee in the fall of 1903. They have lived in Cherokee ever since then.
--- Mrs. Hockman's father, James G. Motter preceded her to the great beyond some years ago.
--- At the age of 17 years she obeyed her Lord in Christian baptism, becoming a member of the Christian Church in Dorchester, Nebraska. She has lived a constant Christian life.
--- She was a member of the state executive board of the Oklahoma Women's Christian Temperance Union, having been president of the Alfalfa County W.C.T.U. for the past (almost) six years. She was state evangelistic superintendent of the Oklahoma W.C.T.U. for the past (almost) two years.".
