October is recognized by some organizations as National Celiac Disease Awareness Month, other states & organizations celebrate Celiac Awareness in May - we can never get enough national attention so lets make use of it by talking to family, co-workers to help with spreading the awareness of celiac disease/gluten intolerance.
For those who read the article in the Sheboygan Press from Monday, Sept 20th which had the headline: “gluttons for gluten-free” then you already know that many in the group were upset by the news that the gluten-free diet was just a fad, the “it” diet soon to be forgotten. I did write a letter to the editor expressing my view of the article and am waiting to see if they will publish it. We need to stand together to make the public aware of our dietary needs, our health concerns, our absolute need to eat gluten-free.
Port Washington has a restaurant called “The taste of Africa” that is serving all naturally dairy free, gluten-free sugar-free and vegetarian, it is located at 117 Main St - check out their site at www.porttasteofafrica.com for more details. Phone 262-268-1007.
Since our evening at South High was canceled ( due health problems of the teacher), we will be celebrating our 5th anniversary at St Mark’s from 7 -8:30 (come early if you can) with a Pot Luck dinner so bring your main dishes too this time, maybe a tablecloth if you can, sparking grape juice to share, dinner rolls, anything to make it festive. Hope to see you there.
The November meeting will be Nov 16th but the meeting will be limited to 30 members so we can meet at the Pizza Ranch, Lori Veldkamp has mentioned that the cost will be about $7.00 since we need to provide the crusts, beverages are extra & the salad bar is $4.99. More details will follow with the Nov newsletter, the time will be 6:30 p.m.
With Halloween coming at the end of the month, please visit several of the sites that list safe gluten-free candies, or call the companies to see if their product is safe.
Have a great fall, enjoy the apple season, the falling leaves & cooler weather.
