Mixed Drinks


Moscow Mule

        Ice cubes        
        1 oz vodka
        1 tsp sugar syrup
        Fresh lime juice
        ½ cup ginger beer
        1 sprig fresh mint
        1 slice of lime
        Ice cubes

In a highball glass or copper mug, pour vodka over ice.  Add sugar syrup and lime juice.  Top with ginger beer and stir.  Garnish with mint sprig and lime slice.



Hot Mulled Apple Cider - serves 6-8

        ½ gallon (8 cups) fresh, unfiltered apple cider, preferably organic
        Grated zest of 1 orange
        10 whole cloves
        4 cinnamon sticks
        ½ cup Jack Daniel's or another Tennessee-style whiskey, optional
        ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
        ½ tsp freshly ground nutmeg

In a medium-size pot, bring the cider to a simmer over medium-high heat.  When it simmers, add the orange zest, cloves, cinnamon sticks, whiskey (if using), brown sugar, and nutmeg.  Stir well.  Let the cider return to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, adjusting the heat up or down to maintain a simmer.  Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or chinois and serve warm.



Watermelon Margaritas - serves 4

        4½ cups peeled, diced seedless watermelon
        ¾ cups high-quality tequila (preferably Patron Silver)
        ¼ cup sugar
        ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
        2 Tbsp triple sec
        4 cups ice

In a blender, process half the watermelon, half the tequila, 2 Tbsp of sugar, 2 Tbsp of lime juice, 1 Tbsp of triple sec, and 2 cups of ice until smooth.  Transfer to a pitcher.  Repeat with the remaining watermelon, tequila, sugar, lime juice, triple sec, and ice.  Add this second batch to the first and refrigerate until ready to serve.



Southern Sweet Tea - serving 1

        Ice cubes        
        1 oz sweet tea vodka
        ½ oz peach schnapps
        1 cup sweet tea
        Lemon wedge
        1 sprig of fresh mint

Put ice cubes in glass.  Pour sweet tea vodka and peach schnapps in glass.  Add sweet tea and stir.  Garnish with lemon wedge and mint sprig.



Watermelon Mojitos - serves 6

        30 large fresh mint leaves, coarsely torn by hand
        3-4 thick slices fresh watermelon
        12 oz Bacardi light rum
        ½ cup simple syrup, see below
        6 Tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice (3 limes)
        Sprigs of mint and spears of watermelon, for serving

    Simple syrup:
        Put 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small pan and simmer until the sugar dissolves.  Chill.

Use a mortar and pestle to mash the mint leaves.  Remove and discard the rind and seeds of the watermelon.  Put the fruit into a food processor fitted with the steel blade and puree.  Put the mashed mint into a large pitcher with 2 cups of pureed watermelon, the rum, simple syrup, and lime juice and stir to combine.  Pour the mixture into a pitcher for serving.

Place ice cubes in 6 glasses and pour the mojito mixture into the glasses.  Garnish with sprigs of fresh mint and spears of watermelon.  Serve ice cold.
