The Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) is part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). For over a century it has been a leader in railway engineering research and education. Beginning with Talbot's fundamental work on railroad track design, and Schmidt & Tuthill's work on train energy and power requirements, through Hay's textbook on railroad engineering. RailTEC has a distinguished record of accomplishment and remains highly respected by today's railroad engineering community. RailTEC is also the leader of the National University Rail Center (NURail Center), a rail-focused, University Transportation Center (UTC) with six other univerity partners under the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) program.
