Cheltanham

The Macan Markar Mansion

Owned and managed by the famous gem merchant Macan Markar family of Galle and Colombo, this magnificent edifice, called "Cheltanham,  stands tall atop a hill facing the Nuwara Eliya Racecourse.

The Royal College Scout Troop, of which I was a member in the sixties, used ths home for the annual camps in Nuwara Eliya. It was reported that the place was haunted and the boys used to shiver in their pyjamas at night expecting to sigjht a ghost. No ghost did I ever see having been there on several occasions.

A significant feature of the house was the long line of steps that came downhill from it to enter the nicely laid out lawn and playground on which we used to play cricket in the warm noonday sun.
