***NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY***
SFGH Postpartum Doula Group
The Postpartum Doula Program was developed in March of 2013. It
extends the amount of care that patients receive by volunteer doulas.
The postpartum doula is an emotional and physical support person for
patient and family in the period immediately following birth. Like
childbirth, the postpartum phase can be emotionally and physically
trying. This is a time when the family adjusts to the addition of the
newborn in their lives and how to care for him/her. Postpartum doulas
in the hospital help mother and baby bond and rest comfortably,
provide emotional and physical information, lactation education and
support. A typical visit may include a massage, help identifying baby
behavior and cues, breastfeeding position guidance, help with movement and perineal care, birth story discussion, and information about specific topics relating to life with a newborn.
Postpartum care is an important component of childbirth and is often
overlooked and/or undervalued. Birth is a major life event, complete
with emotional and physical impacts. Expectations for mothers to
normally resume their routine afterwards are unrealistic and
contribute to the high level of postpartum depression in this country.
Having a doula to process the experience with a mother and offer help
in this next phase, is valuable in promoting a bonded and happy family
Requirements of the program:
1) postpartum doula training
2) current badge and orientation attendance
3) 2 shadow shifts with a current postpartum doula volunteer
4) 4) 12 hour commitment to the program per month (108 hrs per year) (can be combined with volunteer birth work)
5) 3 hour minimum shifts
