Comments

This subset of the Noordin Top Terrorist Network were drawn primarily from "Terrorism in Indonesia: Noordin's Networks," a 2006 publication of the International Crisis Group. It includes relational data on the 79 individuals listed in Appendix C of that publication. The data were initially coded by Naval Postgraduate School students as part of the course “Tracking and Disrupting Dark Networks” under the direction of Professor Sean Everton, Co-Director of the CORE Lab, and Professor Nancy Roberts. CORE Lab Research Associate Dan Cunningham also reviewed and helped clean the data. Please cite the dataset as follows:

  • Roberts, Nancy and Sean F. Everton. 2011. Roberts and Everton Terrorist Data: Noordin Top Terrorist Network (Subset). [Machine-readable data file]
The codebook listed in the book's appendix provides detailed information on the data. Here the data have been uploaded in various formats. The basic subset (as described in the appendix) is uploaded as both an Excel file (Noordin Subset.xlsx) and as a zipped UCINET file (Noordin Subset (UCINET).zip). Additionally, networks derived from the basic subset are also included here:
  • Noordin Subset (Combined Networks).zip -- UCINET formatted files, including the Combined (aggregated and stacked), Operational (aggregated and stacked), and Trust (aggregated and stacked)
  • Noordin Subset (Dervied Networks).zip -- UCINET formatted files, including Business and Financial Ties (one-mode), Logistical Function Ties (one-mode), Logistical Place Ties (one-mode), Logistics (one-mode), Meeting Ties (one-mode), Operations Ties (one-mode), Organization Ties (one-mode), and Training Ties (one-mode)
  • Noordin Susbset (Pajek).paj -- A Pajek project file that includes the Trust (aggregated and stacked), Operational (aggregated and stacked), Communication, Business and Finance, and the Combined (aggregated and stacked) networks. It also includes attribute data loaded as either a partition or a vector.
  • Noordin Susbset (ORA).zip - ORA formatted files, including the Business and Finance Ties, Combined, Communications, Operational, and Trust meta-networks. The attribute data are included with each of the meta-networks. Finally, the attributes in CSV formatted are included with this zip file as well.
