Mid-South SETAC Regional Meeting, May 19-20 in Jonesboro, AR

posted Apr 11, 2011, 6:24 AM by Brian Mulhearn   [ updated Apr 21, 2011, 11:23 AM ]

You are invited to attend the MidSouth SETAC Regional Chapter annual meeting to be held on the campus of Arkansas State University and the Forest Wood Nature Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Jonesboro is the academic, economic and medical center of northeast AR, located near the center of the MidSouth regional chapter on Crowley’s Ridge, a unique geological feature found only in AR and Siberia, Russia. SETAC is a not- for-profit, worldwide professional organization that promotes the advancement and application of science related to contaminants and other environmental stressors, education in the environmental sciences, and the use of science in environmental policy and decision-making. SETAC’s mission is protecting, enhancing and managing sustainable environmental quality as well as ecosystem integrity. Join us May 19-20 at MidSouth SETAC in Jonesboro!

We are inviting abstracts and participation in all areas but especially in Natural Resources Management, Multidisciplinary Approaches to Solving Environmental Problems, Science and Education, Sustainability, and of course, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry!

The 2011 annual meeting will start Thursday morning, May 19, with platform and poster sessions, a catered lunch after a short trip to the Forrest Wood Nature Center, an afternoon Special Symposium featuring invited experts on the geology/landscape of the MidSouth; the influences of the anthropological history of Crowley’s Ridge on the current environmental setting; and a presentation on the genesis and history of the MidSouth Chapter of SETAC.

A “multi-sensory historical experience” will be featured during one of the Symposium breaks. After a short “brain-storming” session to encourage thinking on the future direction of MidSouth SETAC, a nearby reception with spirits and refreshments will allow attendees to unwind from all the day’s science, history and planning.

On Friday, May 2o, we will again meet on the ASU campus with oral and poster presentations on topics related to different aspects of environmental toxicology and chemistry as well as sustainability in the MidSouth region.
We will conclude with a short business meeting, lunch , and for those interested in taking advantage of a truly unique optional field trip opportunity, lunch will be enjoyed while traveling south to Brinkley, AR for a guided canoe trip in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge through the cypress/tupelo wetlands where the “extinct” Ivory-Billed Woodpecker was rediscovered several years ago. A professional ornithologist will provide a history of the rediscovery and subsequent search effort of which he was a key part.

Registration for the meeting will be $40/regular and $20/student until May 13 ($50/regular and $30/student after May 13. On-site registration must be cash or check). Registration includes the Special Symposium and post-symposium reception; all presentations, posters, and discussions; coffee breaks; and lunch on Thursday and Friday. The Cache River National Wildlife Refuge canoe trip will cost $20 per pre-registered person, weather permitting.

We suggest Comfort Suites (, located only four miles from ASU. Accommodations are $90 per night which includes a divided suite for up to five attendees, refrigerator, microwave, continental breakfast, exercise room and both indoor and outdoor pools. Registration information may be found here on the Mid-South SETAC website ( or by calling (870) 219-8421.
