The thing that I liked best about the Misterio was:    

    • The immersion experience was valuable for me; I learned several vocabulary and grammar concepts without trying.
    • The thrill of adventure.
    • The thing that I liked the most was the difficulty of the Mystery.
    • I enjoyed working with my group and feeling the rush of finding who it was.
    • The final was interactive and fun, a welcome break from the traditional written tests in other classes.

Do you think that we should do a regular final instead of the Misterios?  Why or why not?

  • NO!  The Misterio is better because it requires intense critical thinking and language skills, and acts as a pseudo-immersion experience that taught us several common words.
  • No.  I really enjoyed this final.  It effectively tested what we have learned in class as well as helped us continue to learn.  The teamwork and problem solving skills we developed during the final are valuable and will help us in real world situations.
  • No, because any other project wouldn't be any good to establish understanding of Spanish.
  • No, this final is much better because there is more culture.  You get to learn about Spain and it is a race, so people try harder.
  • No, the Misterio was a ton of fun.  I also feel I learned more from it then [sic] from a normal final.

Other comments:

  • My group functioned very well together and I was very happy with the people in my group.  For the most part we all put equal amounts of work in and gave equal input.
  • This (the Paso Final) was the most difficult step but also the most satisfying.  It took my group a while to translate and organize our information in a way that would show contradictions.  Once we figured out the criminal the evidence was easy to find.
  • It was chill.  Nothing needs fixing.  It was great fun.
  • My group was good and hardworking, and we all got along really well and made each other laugh LOL.
  • The Final was great!  Our group would freak when we found clues & what not.

Spanish 1 learners have the option to participate in a special shortened version of the Misterio en Madrid in lieu of a traditional final exam.  To be eligible, the learner must have a passing grade for Semester 2 (at a minimum of a D, but preferably higher).  No student without at least a C for Semester 2 may progress past Paso 1.  The Mystery is an extensive group-based performance assessment that requires about three weeks to complete.  Each learner must be present and actively participating in helping the group solve the Mystery in order to receive the points earned by the group.  Any points lost for refusing to participate (including but not limited to truancy, wasting time, working on something other than the Mystery, randomly surfing the Internet, sleeping, etc.) cannot be made up.  The instructor is the final judge of whether or not you are actively participating.

The shortened version of the Mystery is comprised of 3 pasos, or steps.  The first 2 pasos are worth 100 points each, and the final paso worth 150 points, for a total of 350 points.  In addition, each group may submit a Wanted Poster as extra credit worth 25 points for the group.  The points will only be awarded if your poster depicts the correct criminal for your group.

The Mystery contains both online and traditional components.  All the information needed to solve the mystery can be found by following the links in given to you by the instructor.  You may use other sites on the Internet to look for information, but this is somewhat dangerous and potentially misleading.  Just as in any research, consider the source of your information before you trust it.

You are expected to work hard and participate actively in helping the other members of your group.  The Mystery will reward you with both learning new material and using your existing skills.  Although the puzzles may at times stump you, be assured that learners have solved them successfully for over a decade, so there is no need to cheat.  Use the resources available to you (your notes, textbooks, paper dictionaries and reference books, your group members, websites, and your common sense and ingenuity) and remember that sometimes you have to mull things over for awhile before you think of the right approach.  If you hit a brick wall, step back, re-evaluate, and discuss the problem with your group.  Often the person who has the right strategy to solve a puzzle is the person you least expect.  At all times, teamwork is the key to success.

On the final paso, signing your name to the final solution sheet means that you are accepting the points that the group earns based on the name of the criminal and the three pieces of evidence that your group has found.  There will be no second chance to submit this information.  Therefore, do not sign your name unless you believe that you have thoroughly exhausted all the possibilities and accurately researched the information comprising the alibis.  If in doubt, do not sign, keep working!


Your personal score will be determined as follows:

Group total points x percentage of time you were present to contribute to the group
Example: 275 group, present 8 out of 10 days = 80% of 275, that is, 220 points out of 350
The only way you can make up an hour of absence is to come in on your own time for an hour and work on the Misterio before your group finishes.
Only excused points can be made up.  Work hard while you’re in the classroom!

Students are expected, as always, to abide by school and classroom guidelines.  Cheating will not be tolerated.  You must do your own work, using only the sanctioned resources.  

The following activities will be considered cheating:

  • Consulting with persons (other than the instructor) who are not learner members of your group.  This includes communication in person, electronically, by text, by phone, etc.

  • Using electronic translator software of any kind to look up more than one word at a time or to translate all or part of a website.  This includes but is not limited to:  Google Language Tools, Google Translator, iTools, etc.

  • Taking any Mystery materials from the classroom, except for your Wanted Poster.

  • Accessing the Misterio resources outside of class time, sharing files outside of your group, or  hacking into the Misterio files.  Follow the links given to you by the instructor.

Any learner who cheats on the Final Exam will be subject to discipline and loss of credit.  Do not put yourself in this position.  You will put yourself at risk of failing the exam.  There will be no “warnings” or second chances.   Remember that anything you do using your school account is traceable.  Honesty and a strong work ethic are important character traits that are an integral part of being successful as a learner.  Do work that you can be proud of.   Successfully completing the Misterio is a proud tradition in Señora McPeak’s Spanish classes.  Be part of that exciting legacy!
