Annual Senior Fitness Assessment and Healthy Aging Fair

Location:  Texas Woman’s University, Hubbard Hall, Southwest Ballroom, 304 Administration Dr., Denton, TX  76204

Date:  Saturday, September 27, 2014

Time:  8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Admission:  Free, however, we are asking participants donate two canned goods.

Parking:  Free

Description:  The "Senior Fitness Test" was developed as part of the LifeSpan Wellness Program at California State University by Dr. Roberta Rikli and Dr. Jessie Jones.  This test is an excellent opportunity to take a snapshot of your fitness level.  TWU and UNT students will be doing the assessments on participants under the supervision of Physical Therapists and you will receive a health report card.  In addition, there will be a healthy aging fair.

Sponsors:  Age Well Live Well Denton, Allied Health Pathways, Love to Live Well, Seniors in Motion, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Texas Woman's University, and the University of North Texas.



 
 
Current Events: 2014
-Seniors in Motion thanks NuStep for supporting Alzheimer's Association and sponsoring the Longest Day. Out of 10 teams, Senior In Motion placed 3rd overall by raising the upper hand in funds while collaborating with Good Samaritan Society. We were able to raise a grand total of $3,400 dollars!
This won Seniors In Motion a new NuStep T4 Recumbent Cross Trainer!!

- Jan. Thanks to Denton Benefit League; SIM was able to receive grants to acquire a BioSway (portable balance assessment & training equipment) and an Automated External Defibrillator

- Jan. Thanks to Denton Benefit League; SIM is able to receive grants to acquire Star Trac Leg     
            Press and expansion tower (for upper body workout) for our existing Shuttle.

- Seniors in Motion presented six (6) educational programs on “The State of Aging and Health in America;” C.D.C., Department of Health & Human Services study.

- Hosted Michael J. Fox Foundation, Research seminar with Parkinson’s and Caregivers Together.

- Participated in seven (7) Health Fairs providing postural exams, hand grip analysis, work place ergonomics for Denton Independent School District, Lake Dallas Independent School District, Immaculate Conception Church (bilingual),  Healthy Heart Health Fair, UNT Health Fair for Career Professionals, Lakeside Manor Health Fair.

- Emeritus College Seminar, University of North Texas - “Sensitive Guide to Exercise and Wellness for Seniors,” will be presented by Seniors in Motion Fall, 2009 in cooperation with UNT and TWU Departments of Gerontology and Nutrition

- Brown Bag Seminars: Celebrate Active Aging Week at Seniors in Motion - Topics: Fall prevention, Nutrition, Breast Health, T’ai Chi, and Emergency Management.

- Research: University of North Texas, Initiated in Aug. 2009-Feb. 2010 - “Community Fitness Program Benefits Seniors and their Families.” A Comprehensive Study

- World Health Organization: Quality of Life Instrument- Jan. 2009, included in Seniors in Motion assessment program - Pending collaboration with University of Johannesburg, South Africa (cross-cultural study)

- 2009 Pinnacle Award Recipient - National award to be given at the American Association of Homes & Services for the Aging; Chicago, IL, Nov. 9-11, 2009

o       Awards: Trophy, media exposure in industry publications, Nu-Step Cross Trainer, accommodations & flight to Chicago, IL. * Cross-trainer will be a welcome addition to our cardiovascular program.
