Wellington Vineyards is a family winery owned by father and son team John & Peter Wellington/ The estate vineyard consists of 21 acres, 8 of which are 81-113 years old. These are some of the oldest vines in Sonoma Valley! Wellington practices "sustainable" agriculture (do I really have to use that buzz word? as if 113 year old vines isn't proof enough of sustainability?), using a blend of organic and traditional farming practices that promote healthy vines and a healthy environment. The vines are both field blends and single varietal blocks of Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. There are also 10 acres of younger (11-16 year old) vines of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne and Syrah.
The ENTIRE winery is run on SOLAR energy. Rooftop photovoltaic cells provide facility power at peak load, with 174 Mitsubishi 170 watt solar panels. 2,400 square feet of high capacity solar panels generate roughly 30 kilowatts peak power. Excess power is sold back to the local utility company for credit. It's estimated the solar system spares nearly 22 tons of harmful greenhouse gases annually, comparable to over 4 acres of trees! The winery is a Sonoma County certified Green Business.
Production began in 1989 with a harvest of 18 tons (1000 cases). Many of the wines are produced in quantities of less than 200 cases. Wellington says our "wines are sold primarily at the Tasting Room in Glen Ellen; availability elsewhere is and will remain extremely limited." The Secret Wine Shop will be one of those lucky destinations in San Francisco where you'll be able to find these wines!
2006 Estate Grenache. Grenache is the dominant force in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and plays a major role in many of the best wines of Southern France and Spain. Wellington's old vine blocks contain a good number of Grenache vines, particularly the “newer” 1912 and 1924 blocks. 2006 was only the third vintage of a Grenache-labeled wine. Old and young vines were harvested together along with a small amount of old vine Mourvedre and Durif (aka Petite Sirah), to help add structure and stabilize the color. Fermented in an open top tank with frequent punch downs (to manually mix in the tannins). It smells heavenly, with aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry, plum, pepper and allspice. It is rich, soft, and full bodied. Only 240 cases produced.
2006 Estate Syrah. Wellington is blessed to have a good number of Syrah vines in all their old vineyard blocks, planted between 1892 and 1924. Beautiful dark color and dense aromas of cocoa, bacon and black fruits give way to a soft and rich mouth feel. At only 13.9% alcohol, this is a very food friendly wine. Recommended food pairings are beef bourgignon, mushroom risotto and pheasant basted with roasted shallots and carmelized onion sauce. Only 207 cases produced.
