Michael Muscardini is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Emilio Alchera, who brought the family tradition from Italy to California in 1935 when he founded the "St. Helena Napa Valley Wine Company". Now Michael continues this tradition, with his passion to create handcrafted, small production Italian varietal wines from some of the best vineyards in the region, including the famous Monte Rosso vineyards, planted by Louis M. Martini in 1830. The vineyards are chosen for ideal growing conditions suited to each grape varietal. The wines are designed to express the unique terroir of each vineyard. In 2009, Michael won the Best Micro-Winery award for California State.
In Sonoma, Michael shares a tasting room with Ty Caton, where they were voted best tasting room in Sonoma Valley. If you get a chance, go visit and taste their exceptional wines! If you find yourself wishing you had a bottle to open for a dinner party and don't have the time to drive all the way out there, you can buy Michael's wines at the Secret Wine Shop in San Francisco!
2007 Syrah, Gracie Creek, Sonoma Valley. Grown at only 2 tons per acre. Intense purple almost black in color. Aromas of smoked meats and chocolate with big dark fruit. The dark berry flavor explodes with a big mouth feel and a smoky yet earthy character in the finish. Winner Judges' Choice 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Only 152 cases produced.
2007 Syrah, Unti Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley. This one is usually the favorite in the tasting room. An aroma of mulberry with a burst of white pepper notes. The flavor is loaded with black cherry and plum.
2007 Sangiovese, Pauli Ranch. Double Gold in the 2009 California State Fair Wine Competition (98 out of 100 points). Reveals aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of provence herbs and forest floor.
2007 Tesoro, a "super Tuscan" blend (Pauli Ranch Sangiovese blended with Unti Vineyard Syrah blended with Ty Caton's Cabernet Sauvignon). Enjoy the aromas of plums, chocolate and dark fruit with a hint of herbs. Savor the full fruit with hints of ripe boysenberry. The finish is beautifully balanced with velvety tannins. A great food wine.
2008 Barbera, Pauli Ranch. Aromas of plum and black pepper. Savor the bright fruit and velvety texture with a burst of cherries and a lingering, almost smoky finish. Gold medal winner 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Pairs exceptionally well with smoked deer sausage.
