Godspeed is an artisan grower in the Mount Veeder Appellation of Napa Valley situated at an altitude of 1500 feet. I call them "those hippies up on Mount Veeder", way out in the middle of the mountain and down a gravel road. In their farming practices, no pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals are used in the fields. They use only recycled natural compost and fertilizer. Drip irrigation is via their own on-site well. All pruning and harvesting is done by hand.
The berries grown at this altitude are slightly smaller, more concentrated and have a high natuaral acidity that allows a more focused and fruit forward, yet old world style in the winemaking. The vineyard is the project of the Larry Stricker family. Larry sells his fruit to recognized wineries such as Robert Craig, Bremmer, William Hill, Newton, and Monticello. Since 1990 he has been bottling under his own label. Three wines are produced at Godspeed: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Trinity. All three are made in a very elegant style, with emphasis on the vineyard's unique microclimate.
All wines available in half bottles; perfect for sharing over a meal in a restaurant. The Chardonnay bottle has graceful riesling shoulders. The Cabernet Sauvignon bottle has bordeaux shoulders. The Trinity bottle is a unique tall shape. These wines are all in limited supply.
Chardonnay vintages 2002-2009. After six years (1990-1996) of modifying wine making techniques, testing out which oak flavors best complemented their fruit, adjusting the amount of new oak barrels and aging time, Godspeed arrived at a style that exemplifies the unique qualities of their Mount Veeder fruit. The vines were planted in 1987 using the "Spring Mountain Clone". Burgundian in style and featuring 100% Estate Mountain grown and hand-harvested Chardonnay, the grapes were whole cluster crushed and barrel fermented (without any malolactic fermentation) in lightly oaked (less than 25% new oak) barrels. The result: a crisp refreshing wine with a tropical fruit nose and a citrus back that drinks especially well in warm weather and pairs beautifully with Southwestern and Asian cuisine. It's a great food wine and an age-worthy Chardonnay that rivals any Chassagne-Montrachet.
Cabernet Sauvignon vintages 1998-2003. 100% estate grown and hand harvested. Deep purple in color with a blackberry, tobacco infused nose. Luxuriously mouth filling with a good tannin grip and texturous palet. A voluptuous and well-structured wine that is attractive now and will drink well for many years to come. The 1998 already exhibits soft tannins from aging that some people would pay a fortune for. Hold it up the the light, look at the color, sniff then drink, it almost tastes like a ruby port, but without the sweetness. Pure luxury.
2005 "Trinity". The newest offering is a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. With a nose of black cherry, roasted coffee & black pepper, it's mouth filling and superbly balanced with a lingering chocolate finish exhibiting the unique terroir of Mount Veeder.. At 13.5% alcohol, this is a very food friendly wine. Only 390 cases produced.
