Kid’s Christmas Shopping

Saturday, December 8, 2018
Second Congregational Church
19 Crescent St, Biddeford ME 04005

The Kids' Shopping event provides children the ability to obtain a gift for up to 4 special adults in their lives.  This program was sponsored for many years by Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center, but with the closing of that program, this event was passed on to the Second Congregational Church, where it has been held for many years.

Volunteers and community support this program so that kids have the opportunity to pick out gifts for their loved ones, free of charge.

We stock only adult gifts, so for families looking for assistance with toys would need to seek assistance through other programs. There are many programs available locally that will assist parents in giving their children gifts for the season, but we hope to empower children to help learn the spirit of giving.

Pre-registration is important!!
  • For children the age of 5 years or under or unable to shop without a parent, we will have pre-wrapped gifts ready.
  • For older children, there are shopping helpers who go through the store with them and assist them in picking out special gift(s), for up to 4 adults.
  • Gifts are wrapped at the wrapping station and leave ready to put under the tree.
  • As part of this event we will have a Pancake Breakfast for participating families.
  • There will be entertainment for those who are waiting and for parents who have eaten and are waiting for their children to return from shopping.

Because of the high numbers of those who take part, we use a reservation system. Again we need families to pre-register.  If families arrive and have not pre-registered and received a  reservation, they may be asked to wait for the next available time.

Numerous volunteers are needed, due to the large volume of families served on this day. A variety of tasks are available, from helping kids shop to wrapping to assisting with the family breakfast.

For those who wish to give donations of items that are added to our “store”, we ask you to remember that we will not be offering gifts for children, so adult gifts only.  Only gently used, like-new items are accepted.

We ask people to think of what you would like to receive from a child in your life and donate it so that a child can give it to the adult in their life. We ask that all donations be brought to Second Congregational Church starting mid- November. We are always short of Men’s items such as tools or sports items.

We hope to involve volunteers in the community with the preparations and hands on participation the day of the event.

The last two weeks before the event (weeks following Thanksgiving) there will be workshops daily 9 am – 1 pm to sort and get items ready for the “store”

We can’t do it alone and the community makes a big difference in making this program happen.

Letters and contact information has been sent to several businesses in the area letting them know how they can help. If we have missed anyone, please contact us.
