International Ed and Immersion Categories

(revised 8/30/2017)

If you are working on the International Ed Category, you will need to have both your principal and the International Education Administrator sign off on the Assessment Tool. The International Education Administrator only signs off after the principal has reviewed (and evaluated) and signed off, and wants to meet in person at your school for the review of the Assessment Tool you've completed and your collection of evidence (unit/lesson plans, student work, displays, etc.). (It's great to meet with the principal too, but that's not required.) The International Education Administrator is also very happy to meet with you while you're preparing your Assessment Tool and evidence or to review drafts of your reflections, etc. It is much better to meet with together sooner, than to wait until the last minute.

The deadline to submit updates last year was January 24, 2017, so we can assume the date will be similar this year, but it could be earlier (e.g., December 2017). Please let me know if you'd like me to meet with you to sign off on your Assessment Tool.

Thanks, Michele Anciaux Aoki, International Education Administrator

Steps to Earn the International Education Category

1.  Review the following:
  • International Education School Board Policy No. 2177, adopted May 16, 2012
  • The common expectations for all International School staff as well as any school specific expectations
  • The International School Component Assessment Tool for the International Education Category

2. Teacher: Meet with your principal about your plan to work on the International Education Category during the Goal Setting conference to ensure the Assessment Tool is used and updated routinely throughout the year.

3. Teacher: Gather a collection of evidence – both teacher and student work, including evidence from at least one unit with a global education focus that you developed yourself or significantly adapted for your class. Evidence may include curriculum maps, projects, assignments, etc. (Individual schools have the option of specifying additional requirements for evidence.) Complete the reflection portion of the Assessment tool.

4. Teacher: Meet with your principal/building administrator to determine whether the category has been earned. All areas must be rated at least Developing, and at least one area must be rated Advanced. Check with HR about deadlines for submitting the updated category form.

5. Teacher and Principal: Sign off on the Category update form and the Assessment Tool, then arrange to meet with the International Education Administrator.

6. Teacher and Principal and International Education Administrator: Meet to review the Assessment Tool and the teacher’s collected evidence (portfolio) so that the International Education Administrator can sign off on the Tool. (International Education Administrator will scan the signed copy for you.)

7. Teacher: Submit a copy of the Category Update form to HR. (HR usually requests these updates by mid-January)
