BIRTH OF A BAND

posted Mar 28, 2012, 11:17 PM by Neelesh Kamkolkar   [ updated May 10, 2012, 7:44 PM ]

The Summer of ’92 may not roll off your tongue as poetically as The Summer of ’69, but to Shruti, it is one significant summer. In fact, four of our members could swear those were the best days of their life!

Fresh off the boat, three men and a girl met in Seattle with more things in common than their Indian roots – they had talent in their blood, music in their hearts, and some time on their hands. Shankar brought his guitar, I. Ashok his keyboard, and Bash and Bipasha their magical voices. The intent was simple - just hang out and jam for the love of music. Old favorites from Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Chori Chori.  And from Bees Saal Baad, completely innocent of the subtle prophecy that this “jamming” would still be going strong even after twenty years.

After a few weekends of jamming, the foursome felt they were ready to share their music with the world. Well, at least with a miniscule part of it to begin with. They approached the Music and Cultural Society of India (MCSI) for a small performance, and managed to get a slot in their Diwali celebration. They were official!

And so a band was born. A band that had to have a name; a band that would appropriately be called SHRUTI – the practice of passing ancient wisdom across generations by word of mouth, through verses set to music. Shruti also means pitch, which, musician across all cultures will agree, is one of the central tenets of music.

The rest is history, or depending on your perspective, the future of Shruti. In the sequent years, Shruti has grown significantly in terms of size, performance, reach and most importantly, loyal support. For that, you have our heartfelt gratitude!

Through the years, Shruti has created some beautiful memories on and off stage, showcased some very talented musicians and has had the pleasure to play to a wonderfully receptive audience. We have fostered great relationships with several organizations, the most lasting being our partnership with CRY, Seattle (since 1999) and AID, Portland (since 2003), the key sponsors of our signature show Ina Mina Dika.

In 2012, we are excited to have Chaya-API co-sponsor IMD along with our long standing partner CRY.
