Discerning and Speaking the Truth
Save the Date: SCASD annual meeting for 2017
Friday, September 8 - Saturday, September 9, 2017, Pierre

On behalf of the Executive Committee, you are invited to participate in the annual meeting of the Speech Communication Association of South Dakota in Pierre, September 8 and 9, 2017.  Our conference theme this year is “Advocacy and Inquiry: Discerning and Speaking the Truth.”  Once again, we will be coordinating our conference with the South Dakota Council for the Teachers of English (SDCTE).

We invite educators and scholars interested in attending and presenting in secondary and post-secondary education, research and scholarship, and debate, theatre, and forensics.   We extend a special invitation to educators who work across the English and Speech/Theatre fields, and to young scholars presenting their research for the first time.

We will be welcoming several keynote and guest speakers, including Jason McEntee, Professor and Head of the Department of English at South Dakota State University, a leader in research and education, having mentored dozens of South Dakota teachers and scholars.  His research focuses on war literature and film, and he facilitates the Literature and Medicine Program at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Hospital.  Dr. McEntee earned the 2010 Victor Webster Award for Excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, and also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Humanities Council.

The conference will also feature a session with Brooks Bowman, Assistant Executive Director for Fine Arts with the South Dakota High School Activities Association.  Please note: The Speech Communication Association of South Dakota will be holding our awards banquet and business meeting at noon on Friday, so the SDCTE can hold their business meeting in the evening.

The University of South Dakota will offer continuing education credit (CEU), and graduate credit is also being arranged.

This is a busy time of year for many coaches, teachers, and professors, so please drop an email to one of the conference planners to let us know what program or submission you will be proposing.  This will allow us to plan the convention program, while still giving you time to complete your proposals.

Conference and hotel registration will be distributed in May.

See the attached call for submissions for instructions on how to submit your papers and Great ideas for Teaching Speech (GIFTs), proposals, posters, panels, and workshops.  The full program will be available on the website by August 1.

Make this the year that you invite a colleague from your school to show them what SCASD can offer them!  See you in Pierre!
