I am currently an Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in the Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies.  My focus is on the ‘meat’ of speech: I do research on speech production with an emphasis on anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of speech, and the genetic, developmental, and evolutionary underpinnings of the vocal tract. I am interested in how these factors, along with the aerodynamic, acoustic, perceptual, and social facets of speech, conspire to shape speech sound systems, both giving rise to striking similarities yet also diversity from one language to the next.

I have a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Victoria, Canada. My dissertation, entitled "The Epilarynx in Speech", can be downloaded here. My postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, NL) in the department of Language and Genetics focused on genetic biases in speech.
