SUMC Staff Parish Committee is thrilled to announce that Bishop Mark Webb has appointed Christian (Chris) Jewell as our new pastor effective July 1, 2019.  Pastor Jewell will be serving two churches, SUMC and Faith UMC in Schenectady, both in a part time capacity. The Staff Parish Committees of both churches will be meeting to work out the details, including adjusted worship times, to assist both congregations and Pastor Jewell to transition smoothly to a new form of collaborative ministry.  Over the next several months,  opportunities to get to know Pastor Jewell will be arranged.

Here is a brief bio Pastor Jewell prepared so we can learn a little about him:

After receiving an MA degree from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in 2006, I spent a year studying and practicing meditation in Colorado.  This was a wonderful adventure that opened a New Creation up before my eyes - or maybe it is more accurate to say that this spiritual practice transformed my way of seeing God's always transforming creation!  It was through this leg of my journey that I began to understand with all my heart, and not just my intellect, that we are, as Christians, people of the New Creation! That is Good News!  Shortly after my returning from Colorado, I began working with the men and woman of Rochester NY Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation program.  Here I encountered human beings dealing with drug addiction, homelessness, and the effects of systemic injustice.  This was an environment that challenged my ideas, my conditioning...I cannot love or serve, especially a diverse group of human beings, if I am viewing the world through my own lens. And, this is where I say my Spiritual life enriching my relationships.  I must follow "the way" of Christ and allow a new Christ-centered perspective to replace the old conditioned, culturally exclusive one.  Love and service in the name of Christ challenges and transforms.
After receiving my Master of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 2012, I began serving as a pastor with the UMC.  For the first time I learned the joys and challenges of teaching, preaching, and serving in a parish setting.  Parish ministry continues to be a humbling and refreshing experience.  It too, like my time at the Salvation Army, demands that I be open- so that I may be "born again" of the Spirit today and every day.

Please join me in welcoming Christian Jewell to the Scotia UMC family!

Help Needed

Thanks to all of you for making our Homecoming Mini Hot dog roast a great success.  The tent, the balloons, the music; it was a fun night to be at the church. Thanks again to all who cooked the mini hot dogs, made meat sauce, cut up onions, made bake goods, put up the tents , cleaned up or just came by to eat.  Hey, we even made $307.00 for the church. A real special thanks to Alec Flansburg for providing some great drumming throughout the evening.

A Boardman & Grey Grand Piano has been donated to the church in loving memory of Jacqueline E. (Jackie) Mosher.  Jackie was a dedicated member of the church choir.  The Boardman & Grey 5'10" grand piano was built in 1919.  It was partially restored in 1988 with new bridge caps, new pinblock, hammers, other actions parts and the keyboard.  In 2016, the action regulation and tuning was redone and it was refinished in a brown mahogany, semi-gloss finish.  Jackie, who spent so many hours sitting at the piano, playing and singing, would be pleased to know that her "baby" is now a part of this church's music program.
