About Southern Cycling Operations

We meet on the 2nd Wednesday each month at the Bike Zoo.  Come around 7 for socializing - meeting starts around 7:30.  We provide pizza, soft drinks, and beer, you provide the stories and good times.

Taken from SCO's first newsletter, dated January 1998.

"Unlike many bicycle clubs around the country, SCO was formed to promote cycling on many different levels. This is not just a road bike club or a mountain bike club, a racing club or a touring club, but all of the above and more. The primary goal of this club is to provide a support group for anyone who wants to get involved in the sport of cycling, whether as a recreational road rider, professional downhill racer, or any other level of cycling. In addition to being a support group, SCO plans to promote several road and mountain bike races in the Knoxville area, allowing easier access into the sport of bicycle racing for those who are interested. SCO is also leading mountain bike trail building parties at I.C. King Park in an effort to make mountain biking more easily accessible. Finally, SCO hopes to become somewhat of an advocacy group for cycling by gaining access to more areas for mountain biking and also becoming active in local and state politics in an effort to improve road conditions for cyclists."

Over the years, SCO has succeeded in reaching its original goals while adding a few along the way.  SCO has been active in the community and has had several members serve on the Metropolitan Planning Commission Bicycle Advisory Board and helped pass statewide legislation to protect road cyclists (The 3 foot law).  SCO's members also created and currently maintain the trail system at I.C. King Park as well as pick up trash on Neubert Springs Road as part of Knox County's "Adopt a Road" program.
