Microengineered Hydrogels for Stem Cell Bioengineering and Tissue Regeneration

Keynote Speaker: Hojae Bae, Ph.D.

  • Instructor Department of Medicine Harvard-MIT Health Sciences Technology
    Harvard Medical School
    Brigham and Women's Hospital
July’s SHOW focuses on recent advancements made at the convergence of bio-engineering and regenerative medicine. Dr. Bae’s lab has developed approaches that merge microscale techniques with hydrogel biomaterials for directing stem cell differentiation and generating complex 3D tissues.

Hydrogel biomaterials have been increasingly used in various tissue engineering applications since they provide cells with a hydrated 3D microenvironment mimicking native extracellular matrix. The presentation will focus on cell-microenvironment interactions which can be controlled using patterned hydrogels to direct the differentiation of stem cells as well as novel approaches using fabricated microgels, seeded with different cell types, and induced to self assemble into 3D tissue structures with controlled microarchitecture and cell-cell interactions.
