Mr. Land

I would like to welcome everyone to Mr. Land’s Science Class!  I am the science teacher here at St. Jane Frances and I am glad to be part of the team in such a great school with even greater people.  I am honored to be given the privilege to teach students about an engaging subject such as Science.  This is my second year at St. Jane Frances and I will work hard to make sure things run smoothly and try my best to make this and every year as fun as it can be!  I love the outdoors, so I will try to incorporate going outside as much as I can into lesson plans.  I will also be taking advantage of all of the amazing science tools that we have at our disposal, incorporating labs and experiments into lessons as much as possible.  As long as our class shows me they know how to follow the rules, we are in for a fun year!

Water Jet Pack!!

This picture on the left is me a couple of years ago in Ocean City flying with a water propelled jet-pack. This water-jet levitation (JetLev) enables the rider to be able to fly upward into the air and move around forward, backward, side-to-side, and even underwater!!!
How does this work?
Well, Newton's third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, the jet-pack is ejecting water at high velocity toward the water's surface. This is generating a significant force downward. The resulting opposite force pushes upward, elevating the rider. The actual pump for the unit is located on a floating watercraft attached to but not elevated with the jet-pack. It was pretty awesome to feel like a super hero for the afternoon!
