Schwenk Sculptures Featured at Stevenson University

Greenspring, MD. Washington D.C. / Baltimore based sculptor and photographer Mark Schwenk is a featured artist in the new Guarnieri Sculpture Garden at Stevenson University in Baltimore County, MD ( ). The University unveils the 11-piece collection on the Greenspring Campus, Thursday February 18th from 2-4 p.m. followed by a reception.. Schwenk is Co-Founder and CEO of studios @Frog Valley in Berkeley Springs, WV, home of Green Door Gallery showcasing Schwenk’s larger metal sculpture and fine art photography. He is represented in the Sculpture Garden with three pieces, “The Wave”, “The Juggler”, and “Sunflowers”, alongside work from artists Jill Lion and Dale Rodgers.

Stevenson University, known for its distinctive career focus, acquired the sculptures through a generous donation by Baltimore residents and art patrons Michael and Susan Guarnieri. Responding to the need to downsize and find a new home for their collection of stone and metal sculptures, they easily determined they wished to create a space for the benefit of students. However it took three years of exploration and planning to make their vision a reality. Michael Guarnieri adds, “Our plan has been to donate these sculptures to the University to foster culture, learning, and awareness of the arts among a university community.”

Matt Laumann, Stevenson Manager of Cultural Programs believes that the Sculpture Garden is perfectly located in the Knott Hall Courtyard, a highly visible space near the Main Entrance and the Art Wing. Laumann states, “We are very grateful to the Guarnieris for donating these exceptional pieces of art....The collection will serve as a tremendous complement to the already vibrant arts and culture programs at Stevenson.”  The University produced a video about the Dedication that previews some of the featured sculptures and can be seen at .

Schwenk’s metal work, predominately in stainless steel and iron, continues to develop into larger scale projects for both public and private sectors. Beyond studios @Frog Valley his work is seen in Washington D.C.’s Union Station and in the region’s premier commercial residential properties, as featured by Chevy Chase MD design and architectural firm SR/A Interior Design ( Schwenk carries a family history of blacksmiths and metal workers dating back to the 17th century while exploring artistic expressions of architectural ironwork and contemporary sculpture. A lifelong love of photography fuels his passion for both mediums and he continuously captures stunning images alongside his metal work. “Photography and metal sculpture exists in the same realm for me. These forms express my interpretations of light, shadow, movement and meaning. Exploration of the world around me is the thread that binds my artistic vision.”, explains Schwenk.
