Professional Activities
In his research, Schwab investigates the organizational learning processes in project venture settings. He investigates how learning affects project performance, future collaboration patterns, changes in organizational practices, and variability of learning outcomes. In his empirical studies, he has focused on movie projects, professional baseball and football teams, Mid-western manufacturing companies, mining companies, and business founders. His research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, Fulbright, Hearin Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and CIBER. He has co-organized professional development workshops for the Research Method division of the Academy of Management on "Alternatives to Null-Hypothesis Significance Testing" (https://sites.google.com/site/nhstresearch/) and “Bayesian Management Research” (see https://sites.google.com/site/bayesianresearch/).

He is a contributing editor for Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and a guest editor for Organization Studies and International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. He is a member of the editorial board of Organization Science (since 2012), Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (since 2008) and the Journal of Small Business Management (since 2004). He serves on the executive committee of the Research Method Division of the Academy of Management and the Research Method Community of the Strategic Management Society. He is a member of the Academy of Management, INFORMS/Organization Science, and the Strategic Management Society. Prior to his academic endeavors, Schwab was a general project manager at Lufthansa German Airlines with responsibilities for various internal change and outsourcing projects (1991-1993). His research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Industrial and Corporate Change, Strategic Organization, Advances in Strategic Management, Research Methodology in Strategy and Management, Advances in International Management and Family Business Review.

He has taught courses in entrepreneurship, organizational theory, strategic management, management processes, international business, organizational behavior at Iowa State University, Louisiana State University, the University of Mississippi and the University of Wisconsin. In his teaching, Schwab draws on case studies, case competitions, management simulations, business plan projects, and presentations by business practitioners, such as management consultants and successful entrepreneurs.
