General Information

The decree by Danish officials to require a census of the inhabitants of Denmark and the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg has been very beneficial to family historians researching these areas. Many genealogical puzzles have been solved by using these records. Indeed, the omission of these and other records, such as probate and military records, has contributed to many inaccurate pedigree connections. Border changes, naming practices, and language mixtures have all contributed to a variety of research challenges in this area.
