Dr. Hobart S. Jarrett Debate Competition

Debate Competition Preliminaries-Saturday, September 7, 2019, at the College Brothers Summit and Leadership Retreat, at the Petigru College Building, on the campus of the University of South Carolina, Columbia SC.

The two debate team finalists will compete at the 2019 District Conference in Greenville, SC. For additional information Brother Golden may be contacted at: golden06alpha@gmail.com.

Hobart S. Jarrett Debate Competition

The purpose of the Brother Dr. Hobart S. Jarrett Debate Competition shall be to develop the skills of members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in argumentation and research, persuasion, oral and written communication, and critical thinking.

Brother Hobart Sydney Jarrett, Ph.D., was an Alpha Legend, born in 1915 in Arlington, Texas, reared in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was a survivor of the Tulsa race riot of 1921. Despite his having to overcome this life-changing atrocity of American history, Brother Jarrett did not allow anything to sully his path. He attended and graduated from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, with a degree in English in 1936, and was initiated into the Fraternity through the Alpha Sigma Chapter. He entered Omega Chapter on May 8, 2005.

Eligibility

Each debater must be an active collegiate member of the Fraternity and financial at the Chapter, District, Region and National levels. Each debater must be registered at the respective conference. Each team will have two members and one non-participating alternate.

Topic

The 2021 Dr. Hobart Jarrett Debate Competition topic is as follows:

"To effect change, the defunding of police budgets across America is
the impetus for change in policing within communities of color."
