Three Distinguished Brothers Vie to be General Treasurer
At the Baltimore General Convention delegates representing chapters from the District of South Carolina and from around the world will gather to handle the business of Alpha. The major task at hand that will directly impact the fraternity’s future and its fiscal outlook is the election of a new general treasurer. Voting is set for Friday, July 14. If any candidate gains 50 percent plus one vote he will be declared the winner outright. If not, a runoff election will be held before the Convention adjourns on Saturday evening.
Per the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Constitution and By-Laws, “The General Treasurer shall have charge of and be responsible for the proper safeguard of all monies, funds and securities of the General Organization as provided for in the Accounting section of the Fraternal Regulations.”
Three brothers were certified by the Elections Committee to vie for general treasurer, with three distinctly different professional backgrounds.
Brother Elvin Dowling, an initiate of the Eastern Region (Hampton University) is a minister, motivational speaker and author who relocated to Florida. He was an assistant at the National Urban League and is a former assistant vice president of Alpha Phi Alpha’s Eastern Region. Brother Dowling was instrumental in helping the fraternity receive the Department of Justice grant for $1 million to continue their work with young men in target cities through the Go-To-High School, Go-To-College ® national program.
Brother Densel Fleming, an initiate of the Southern Region (Alcorn State University) is an SEC (Series 66) licensed investment advisor and certified financial planner (CFP) and the chief wealth and investment officer at Vintage Wealth Management Group headquartered in Charlotte, N.C. He has more than 20 years of professional corporate finance experience. When he is not growing the assets in the portfolios of institutional and individual clients (across 23 states), in his spare time, he helps nonprofit organizations like the March of Dimes raise money. As its national ambassador in 2011, Brother Fleming helped the March of Dimes raise a record $105 million that year. Fleming was also the 2008 Southern Region Brother of the Year and National Brother of the Year. While a resident of South Carolina, he served as VP of Omicron Kappa Lambda in Sumter and Beautillion Chair in Mu Epsilon Lambda in Conway-Myrtle Beach.
Brother Dameon Proctor, an initiate of the Eastern Region (Pennsylvania State University), is an electrical engineer and a senior systems engineering manager at military defense contractor Northrop Grumman, who is currently on assignment in San Diego, Calif., for a U.S. Navy engineering project. Brother Proctor, who earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, has more than 16 years engineering experience. He also received an MBA with a finance concentration from the prestigious Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University. He says: “along the way I discovered a passion for real estate and hospitality and cofounded a (small) business to invest in hotel deals” two years ago.
To give brothers a more in-depth view of each of the candidate’s professional offerings to be General Treasurer, The Cornerstone encourages you to review their websites, social media platforms and statements to brothers during Regional Convention forums, chapter meetings and other venues in which information has been shared.
We wish them well as they forge ahead over the remaining weeks of this race!
