Savannah State University Hosts Alpha South's 2017 LDCEI
The Southern Region Leadership Development and Citizenship Education Institute (LDCEI) was held June 21 through 25 in Savannah, Ga., at Savannah State University. Of the 220 participants and 30 chaperones, the District of South Carolina was represented with 33 students and nine chaperones. All participants ranged from male or female (ninth through 12th grade) who have demonstrated academic promise and leadership potential within public/private schools within the Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of the LDCEI institute is to provide optimal learning experiences for participants to cultivate their leadership and intellectual development.
“Leadership, Education, and Development” served as the theme of the Institute. Commencing the Institute was a "meet and greet" and team-building activities, followed by a campus tour of Savannah State University, in which University President Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier greeted the LDCEI participants. During the tour, participants learned the essence of active college enrollment and engagement, and a wealth of life skills as they explored the university's facilities. The subsequent sessions during the following days offered LDCEI participants developmental sessions regarding relationships, teen pregnancy, speaking, listening, and writing. Participants also explored national and international issues, dressing for success, and etiquette.
Brothers of the Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. also hosted the Dr. Henry Ponder Oratorical Contest during a semi-formal banquet on Friday, June 23 where selected LDCEI oratorical finalists demonstrated their oratorical skills. The District of South Carolina placed 2nd (Miss Bobbye Webb) and 3rd (Mr. Joshua Williams) in the Oratorical Contest. The Leadership Development Institute concluded with a barbecue and pool party, dinner, talent show, and talent show after party.
