Brother Dr. Anthony Broughton of Alpha Psi Lambda (Columbia), an assistant professor of education at Claflin University, has been featured with Claflin University in the local media showcasing the Call Me MiSTER program and Project Pipeline Repair: Restoring Minority Male Participation and Persistence in Educator Preparation Programs, an initiative of the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO). Brother Dr. W. Franklin Evans of Delta Zeta Lambda (Orangeburg) was inaugurated as the ninth president of Voorhees College on April 7, 2017. In front of an audience of officials of the Episcopal Church, Voorhees faculty and staff, family, friends and other supporters, Brother Dr. Evans took his oath of office and promised to uphold the mission established by Voorhees founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright. “I am honored to take on the prestigious title as president of a historical foundation such as Voorhees College. I will work to make Voorhees the premiere institution of excellence,” Evans said.Prior to being named the president of Voorhees College, Brother Dr. Evans held a number of faculty and administrative posts during his career in higher education. In addition to his role at service at Voorhees, Brother Dr. Evans previously served as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer at South Carolina State University, and later as the Interim President. Brother Dr. Evans is also experienced in the areas of leadership and supervision in all academic programs and curriculum development, faculty recruitment, enrollment management, strategic planning, and the accreditation process.
Brother Scott Allen Gibbs of Xi Gamma Lambda (Beaufort) retired from the Beaufort County Department of Social Services (DSS) on January 31, 2017. During his time at DSS, Gibbs was employed as an economic services specialist and benefits integrity claims specialist. Brother Gibbs also served on the State Claims Board (SCCOWF). The South Carolina General Assembly honored Brother Gibbs with House Resolution 4086 on April 4, 2017, because of his service and outstanding dedication to the Beaufort County Department of Social ServicesIn a letter to Brother Gibbs upon his retirement, the Mayor of Beaufort, Mr. Billy Keyserling, stated, “Scott through your engagement in our community you have brought joy, you have brought hope and you have brought leadership to the many who were looking for a strong and meaningful leader. You have not let us down. Rather your passion for community, for healthy living and for our Lord have made you stand out as one to be admired and appreciated. The challenge now in your retirement, is not become old, but to charge those batteries and keep on working with the many in our community who need your inspiration and your tireless and creative leadership.”
Brother Dr. Willie Harriford received the key to the City of Columbia on May 2, 2017, at the City Council Chambers in honor of his assistance with chartering the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., at the University of South Carolina on March 30, 1973. The Morris College Board of Trustees has named Brother Dr. Leroy Staggers of Omicron Kappa Lambda (Sumter) interim president, effective July 1, 2017. Brother Dr. Staggers, who has a passion of students’ intellectual growth, joined the Morris College family in 1993. Over the last 24 years, he has provided dedicated service to Morris College in a variety of positions, including serving 16 years as the institution’s Academic Dean, responsible for the supervision of all academic programs, all full-time and part-time faculty members as well as all academic support instructional programs. He has worked very closely with Dr. Richardson on all aspects of Morris College’s reaffirmation of accreditation efforts, including working hand in hand with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
Before joining Morris College, he served as Vice President of Academic Affairs, Associate Professor of English, and Director of Faculty Development for Barber-Scotia College in Concord, NC. Additionally, he has served as Instructor of English and Reading at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, and Chairman of the Division of Humanities and Assistant Professor of English at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina.
Brother David Thompson of Delta Zeta Lambda (Orangeburg) is the new chief inspector for the state at the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Brother Thompson will manage about 60 staff members.
