All Roads Lead to Baltimore
Charm City Hosts the 111th Anniversary/94th General Convention
“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there ‘is’ such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” ― Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Members of the world’s oldest intercollegiate fraternity founded by African-American men—Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—will soon be heading to the “Charm City” of Baltimore, Md., home of our national headquarters, to celebrate the 111thAnniversary/94th General Convention. Events will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center, from Wednesday, July 12 through Sunday, July 16, 2017. This is a convention that you do not want to miss!
Under the theme of “The Urgency of Now,” brothers will take care of fraternal business which includes voting on a number of Constitutional Amendments and electing the next General Treasurer, as well as engage in workshops that will enhance personal and professional development and build leadership skills. During the convention, leaders in a variety of disciplines will be recognized for their scholarly work and community advocacy. Also, as is tradition for the General Convention, other events include the Miss Black and Gold Pageant, Hobart Jarrett Debate Competition, Collegiate Scholars Bowl Competition and National Collegiate Step Show. The convention will conclude with the Black and Old Gold Leadership Gala.
As brothers continue to make plans to attend this year’s convention, an important reminder to take note of is that the opening plenary session is on Wednesday at 9 a.m. Typically, the opening session has been in the afternoon, but this year it will begin in the morning. In addition to the brotherhood meetings and events, there will be activities for ladies and youth.
