Home for SBUSD ELA Units of Study

Welcome

Welcome to the home of the South Bay Union School District's English Language Arts (ELA) Units of Study.  To your left and at the bottom of this page you will see a list of grade levels.  When you visit each grade level's page you will find the 2015-2016 Scope and Sequence listed up top as well as the units of study.

Each grade level will begin the year with a three week opening unit, designed to introduce key strategies to our students that will support them throughout the entire year.  This unit is called Developing Readers, Writers, Thinkers and Speakers.  The goal of the first unit is to create the structures and routines that will support students in becoming independent readers, writers, thinkers and speakers now and in their future.  The anchor standards addressed in the unit across grade levels include:

Key Ideas & Details
  • RL.X.1 & RI.X.1 - Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Range of Reading and Text Complexity
  • RL.X.10 & RI.X.10- Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
Comprehension & Collaboration
  • SL.X.1 - Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
