Save The Bluffs started as a quest after a neighbor read notice of sale in the local paper in February 2011. The notice indicated the 155 acres, which she could see from her front window, was purchased by Windsor Permian LLC (now Muskie Proppants, LLC), part of the Oklahoma-based Windsor Energy, for $2.6 million. She told the families in her platted, residential development--which borders the purchased land and a State forest--of the sale. Curiosity of neighbors became disgust, anger, and frustration as we all learned more. A group of close-knit neighbors grew into a movement as we shared what we learned from friends in Wisconsin with our distant neighbors and township officials.
Our mission became: "We the citizens of Goodhue County stand together to preserve and protect our bluffs against silica sand mining and ensure a healthy, scenic, and recreational environment for all. We will partner with local, regional, state and national governments, agencies and citizen’s groups to support, protect and promote the green infrastructure and integrity of our air quality, terrain, water, natural beauty, and land values of our respective communities."
Our lives have changed along with those of our neighbors in Wabasha and Winona Counties of Minnesota, as well as those in Maiden Rock, Chippewa Falls and other towns of Wisconsin. We live here for a rural, small town way of life. This changes everything.
